SPRINGFIELD – The City Council took the first step to stipulate minimum sizes for apartments, after debating how to continue to attract developers who want to increase housing, while at the same time protecting the quality of life for tenants.
The proposal, which passed 8-4 Monday night, sets 500 square feet as a minimum size for one-bedroom apartments, but permits smaller units with a waiver from the City Council. It will need a second reading to be put in place.
“We have a housing crisis and we have out-of-town landlords who are charging more and more for less and less,” said City Councilor Sean Curran, who developed the ordinance after learning some apartments approved by the city provide less than 300 square feet of living space.
