A New Jersey man was arrested and charged Sunday in connection with an early morning fatal shooting in Fitchburg, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said.
Jonathan Reyes-Contreras, 42, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, the district attorney’s office said.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Fitchburg police responded to the area of Mechanic Street in Fitchburg for reports of a person who had been shot, the district attorney’s office said. At the scene, officers found a man with a single gunshot wound outside a car.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead a short time later, the district attorney’s office said. The initial investigation suggests that Reyes-Contreras knew the victim, and there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Reyes-Contreras is expected to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Monday. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been released.
