A 47-year-old man accused of shooting another man in the leg in Saugus’ Cliftondale Square following a road-rage incident Wednesday night had his bail set at $50,00 during his arraignment in Lynn District Court.
Stephen Cooper, of Saugus, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, two counts of assault and battery, disorderly conduct, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and assault and battery with a firearm, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s office said.
Prosecutors say Cooper shot a 32-year-old man in the leg, seriously wounding him, outside an ice cream stand on Lincoln Avenue in Cliftondale Square. Saugus police responded to the shooting around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Cooper pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment Thursday. Judge Amanda Ward set bail at $50,000 and ordered Cooper to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim and witnesses, not possess guns or dangerous weapons and surrender his license to carry a gun. Court records show Cooper was sent to the Essex County jail after not posting bail.
Cooper will return to court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 20.
