There are a lot of different types of laptops out there, but Lenovo wants to give you everything at once with its new ThinkBook modular PC concept, and I kind of love the idea.
The “ThinkBook Modular AI PC Concept,” as Lenovo calls it, builds on the “Magic Bay” feature Lenovo has been working on for the past couple of years. One set of pins on the back can hold a remarkably thin display panel, using that panel either as a rear display for mirroring your display to someone else, or as a secondary display you can use to extend the built-in display.
You can also just pull up the keyboard, putting that second display in its place, and get something like Lenovo’s dual-screen Yoga Book 9i.
So, basically, you’ve got three styles of laptop all in one – the usual, the second display, and the dual-display.
That on its own is super cool, but going beyond that the laptop also features interchangable ports. So you can swap out a USB-C port for USB-A or HDMI. Hopefully there’s an SD card reader in the works too. When extra ports aren’t in use, Lenovo includes a cute little AirPods-style case to house two extras.
Will this ever see the light of day?
In its current form, who knows, but the appeal of a modular laptop very much exists, and I think Lenovo is on the right track here!
