Disney sent Google a cease-and-desist over AI just as it signed a deal with OpenAI

0

Disney announced a billion dollar agreement with OpenAI this morning over use of its characters, and Google’s going to have to pray it doesn’t alter the deal any further.

Alongside the decision to offer up its most iconic imagery and characters for use with Sora — OpenAI’s cross between an AI video generation tool and a social network — Disney is going after Google’s own use of its IP in its own genAI tools. As reported by Ars Technica, Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter to Google on Wednesday evening, hours before the Sora agreement was made official, accusing the company of copyright infringement and requesting an immediate end to using these characters for both training data and within apps like YouTube.

Disney’s letter calls out specific franchises, including Frozen, The Lion King, Moana, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, Toy Story, Star Wars, and the MCU, as the IP Google’s AI tools are currently capable of generating. The company’s lawyers are requesting Google “immediately cease further copying, publicly displaying, publicly performing, distributing, and creating derivative works of Disney’s copyrighted characters,” specifically but not necessarily limited to YouTube and its various off-shoots, like Shorts.

Images from Disney’s legal complaint, shared by Variety.

As reported by Variety, which published portions of the letter, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed his company had held “conversations” with Google for months prior to beginning legal action, but felt Google hadn’t made any in-roads into making changes over its own internal policies. Despite Nano Banana not being specified in today’s cease-and-desist, Disney did include AI-generated figurine images in its claim, arguing Sundar Pichai taking part in an associated viral trend encouraged further drove copyright infringement by users.

Google shared the following statement with Ars Technica:

We have a longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with Disney, and will continue to engage with them. More generally, we use public data from the open web to build our AI and have built additional innovative copyright controls like Google-extended and Content ID for YouTube, which give sites and copyright holders control over their content.

Today’s news is just the latest chapter in the ongoing cold war between Google and Disney, just about a month after settling their dispute over YouTube TV carriage fees.

Driver tried to shoot and kill another man on Mass. highway, DA says

0

A Quincy man is facing charges after trying to shoot and kill another man on Route 128 in Beverly Sunday night, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Thomas Drequan Perkins, 26, pleaded not guilty to eight charges connected to the incident during his arraignment in Salem District Court on Thursday, according to court records. He has been charged with two counts each of assault with intent to murder using a firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon, as well as three gun charges.

The incident stemmed from an argument Perkins had with the victim in the Beverly Service Plaza parking lot on Route 128 north, the district attorney’s office said. Prosecutors allege that, following the exchange, Perkins pursued the victim down the highway.

Around 11:30 p.m., Perkins shot at the victim’s car, which was carrying a passenger, the district attorney’s office said. Beverly and State Police responded to the incident.

During Perkins’ arraignment, the judge granted the prosecution’s request that he be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, which is scheduled for Dec. 18, the district attorney’s office said. The judge also ordered Perkins to refrain from contacting any victims or witnesses associated with the case.

It is unclear whether Perkins knew the victim or whether anyone was injured as a result of the incident. No further information has been released.

The market has ‘switched’ and founders have the power now, VCs say

0

The way venture capitalists think about fund-raising can be a black box. But investors must think about their go-to-market strategy for raising their own funds, just as much as they think about how their portfolio companies find their market fit.

All season on Build Mode, we’ve explored how founders should approach marketing, but this week we’re exploring how VCs sell themselves to founders as trustworthy partners, and to LPs as worthwhile investments.

Isabelle Johannessen spoke with Graham & Walker’s Leslie Feinzaig and XYZ Venture’s Ross Fubini about raising their first funds and how that experience has given them empathy for the founder fundraising experience.

Feinzaig came into venture capital with very few industry connections.”It was hundreds of pitches. It was raised almost entirely from individuals. We ended up with 105 LPs,” she said. “If you don’t have a track record, then what they’re investing in is in you. Like it is basically, like, raising a gigantic angel round with no lead.”

With that outsider perspective she’s been able to position herself as the call founders make before they meet with their board to practice and discuss strategy.

Similarly, Fubini encourages the leadership teams he works with to carefully consider who they are entering into partnership with. His rubric follows three core tenets: person, firm, terms.

“You work with this person for forever. So it’s everything from like, are they fun? Do you trust them? Do they have the juice to get the deal done? It’s everything around this human,” he said.

Both VCs noted the change from the most recent 2022-23 bear market — where VCs held all the cards — to the current eager dealmaking atmosphere where founders have a bit more power. This makes choosing the right VCs that much more important, they say.

Fubini called this shift “thrilling” because, even though both sides still need to do their diligence and ensure they are good fit together, “you can move so quickly” compared to cautious bear markets. “I think that’s fun and joyful,” he said.

Both Feinzaig and Fubini are full of tactical advice for both VCs seeking creative ways to capture founder attention and founders seeking smartest choices for their cap tables.

The pitch deck and cold emails may not have the power they once did but creating authentic relationships and proving on execution remains the best strategies to attract the kind of people you want to work with — from both perspectives.

OpenAI releases GPT-5.2 to take on Google and Anthropic

0

OpenAI’s “code red” response to Google’s Gemini 3 Pro has arrived. On the same day the company announced a Sora licensing pact with Disney, it took the wraps off GPT-5.2. OpenAI is touting the new model as its best yet for real-world, professional use. “It’s better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, writing code, perceiving images, understanding long contexts, using tools, and handling complex, multi-step projects,” said OpenAI.

In a series of 10 benchmarks highlighted by OpenAI, GPT-5.2 Thinking, the most advanced version of the model, outperformed its GPT-5.1 counterpart, sometimes by a significant margin. For example, in AIME 2025, a test that involves 30 challenging mathematics problems, the model earned a perfect 100 percent score, beating out GPT-5.1’s already state-of-the-art score of 94 perfect. It also achieved that feat without turning to tools like web search. Meanwhile, in ARC-AGI-1, a benchmark that tests an AI system’s ability to reason abstractly like a human being would, the new system beat GPT-5.1’s score by more than 10 percentage points.

OpenAI says GPT-5.2 Thinking is better at answering questions factually, with the company finding it produces errors 30 percent less frequently. “For professionals, this means fewer mistakes when using the model for research, writing, analysis, and decision support — making the model more dependable for everyday knowledge work,” the company said.

The new model should be better in conversation too. Of the version of the system most users are likely to encounter, OpenAI says “GPT‑5.2 Instant is a fast, capable workhorse for everyday work and learning, with clear improvements in info-seeking questions, how-tos and walk-throughs, technical writing, and translation, building on the warmer conversational tone introduced in GPT‑5.1 Instant.“

While it’s probably overstating things to suggest this is a make or break release for OpenAI, it is fair to say the company does have a lot riding on GPT 5.2. Its big release of 2025, GPT-5, didn’t meet expectations. Users complained of a system that generated surprisingly dumb answers and had a boring personality. The disappointment with GPT-5 was such that people began demanding OpenAI bring back GPT-4o.

Then came Gemini 3 Pro — which jumped to the top of LMArena, a website where humans rate outputs from AI systems to vote on the best one. Following Google’s announcement, Sam Altman reportedly called for a “code red” effort to improve ChatGPT. Before today, the company’s previous model, GPT-5.1, was ranked sixth on LMArena, with systems from Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI occupying the spots between OpenAI between Google.

For a company that recently signed more than $1.4 trillion worth of infrastructure deals in a bid to outscale the competition, that was not a good position for OpenAI to be in. In his memo to staff, Altman said GPT-5.2 would be the equal of Gemini 3 Pro. With the new system rolling out now, we’ll see whether that’s true, and what it might mean for the company if it can’t at least match Google’s best.

OpenAI is offering three different versions of GPT-5.2: Instant, Thinking and Pro. All three models will be first available to users on the company’s paid plans. Notably, the company plans to keep GPT-5.1 around, at least for a little while. Paid users can continue to use the older model for the next three months by selecting it from the legacy models section.

Fortnite returns to the Google Play Store

0

After a multi-year hiatus, popular battle royale Fortnite is now officially back on the Google Play Store.

If you were unaware, Epic and Google’s ongoing legal battles started all the way back in 2020. After being removed from Apple’s and Google’s storefronts due to in-game purchases and commission for those, new policy changes allow for other app stores to launch on the Play Store with external monetization controls.

Almost six months after Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed the move following the landmark court decision, Fortnite is now back on the Google Play Store as the year draws to a close. Season 7 of the popular battle royale title begins today, which is likely a reason for the app returning to the Play Store in such a quiet fashion.

Until recently, one of the only ways to get Fortnite on Android was via the Galaxy Store or by sideloading on non-Samsung Galaxy phones. The title was pulled from the Korean tech giant’s storefront over a year ago due to an ongoing dispute over Samsung’s sideloading policy.

By returning to the Play Store, the good news here is that, at least in theory, you no longer require the Epic Games Launcher. This application was required to download the APK files needed to install the game, while also providing app updates and other information on Epic titles for mobile and desktop. Epic has yet to confirm whether all app updates will be handled via the Play Store or if players will still be able to use the launcher for future updates. We will update this information should the company confirm its plans.

What’s interesting is that this Play Store return also comes six months after Fortnite returned to the iOS App Store after a full five-year hiatus on the platform. That said, Android gamers have had a workaround at least until now.

Ahead of straw vote, Springfield councilors think they have votes for president, VP in the bag

0

SPRINGFIELD — At-large City Councilor Jose Delgado said Thursday he has enough votes to become the next council vice president.

For president, Tracye Whitfield — who also is elected citywide — reiterated Thursday ahead of a Monday straw vote that she has secured the seven votes needed to win.

But Councilor Melvin Edwards said Thursday he is not conceding the presidency.

“The official vote is not the day after the election,” Edwards, who served as vice president from 2022 through 2024, said in a phone interview Thursday.

He was referring to Whitfield’s news release soon after the Nov. 4 election, saying she had the backing of Councilors Kateri Walsh, Zaida Govan, Justin Hurst, Gerry Martin, Lavar Click-Bruce and Malo Brown, plus her own vote.

Delgado — now entering his second term as an at-large councilor — wouldn’t say Thursday who has his vote for council president.

The official vote isn’t even Monday. That official vote comes in January, after the newly elected council is seated.

But councilors will take the informal straw vote Monday after the close of regular council business. That vote will include Hurst and Martin, who were elected in November but don’t currently sit on council.

The president is chief parliamentarian and runs meetings, and also makes committee assignments. The president also stands in for the mayor if need be.

Runware raises $50M Series A to help make image, video generation easier for developers

0

Flaviu Radulesc started Runware in 2023 when he was testing a text-to-image company and realized that, though genAI tech was powerful, it was slow in generating images. So Radulesc teamed up with Ioana Hreninciuc and launched Runware as a dev tool platform that specializes in generating images, videos, and audio in real time.

The company has seen much growth since it first launched. It has powered more than 5 billion creations for more than 100,000 developers, the company told TechCrunch.

The product lets developers integrate Runware’s API into their apps and then generate media assets through one interface, so they don’t have to set up any new infrastructure or maintain separate integrations. It has a custom AI inference infrastructure for open-source models, and provides day-zero access (meaning as soon as a model is released, it can run on Runware) and competitive pricing, Hreninciuc, who focuses on operations and GTM, told TechCrunch.

On Thursday, the company announced a $50 million Series A in a round led by Dawn Capital. Dawn Capital Partner Shamillah Bankiya is joining the board. Others in the round include Insight Partners and a16z Speedrun. Runware has raised $66 million in funding to date.

Hreninciuc said the company remains competitive through its pricing, which is “more-cost effective,” in addition to having a fully unified API. She said the company does this with its Sonic Inference Engine, which runs on custom AI hardware. It also partners with third-party AI cloud providers so that it can reroute workloads automatically in case more memory is needed.

“On the software side, we heavily optimize model loading and offloading, which lets us support over 400,000 models and make any of them available for inference in real time,” she continued.

Startups that focus on dev tools for image and video have been a particularly hot market for VC interest lately. Fal.ai, for instance, just raised $140 million at a $4.5 billion valuation, its second giant raise in a matter of months. Fal.ai focuses on the breadth of model offerings versus customizing for speed. So, Hreninciuc considers her competitors to be general open-source model makers, such as Hugging Face; Replicate, a startup that runs open-source models in apps with just a few lines of code; and Together AI, a similar genAI model hoster.

These companies, as Radulescu previously told TechCrunch, sell based on GPU compute time. Runware instead leans toward the model of Stable Diffusion and Flux, offering a more cost-per-image generated so that people can pay for what they need rather than buying a block of compute time.

Hreninciuc said the fresh capital will be used to keep expanding the company’s infrastructure and it hopes to use its Sonic Inference Engine to power over 2 million models. The big goal is to be the API for all AI — so that any generative AI model can and does run on the platform.

“We’re also expanding rapidly into new modalities,” she said, adding that the company is going to expand the current team of around 25 to help make that happen.

Overall, Hreninciuc hopes Runware continues to “make it possible for applications to scale to millions of users while actually keeping their margins,” she said, adding that it helps make the market more affordable. That “benefits everyone,” she continued. “From the app builders to the end users, and puts powerful AI into more people’s hands globally.”

Mewgenics, the next game from The Binding of Isaac’s developer, will arrive next February on PC

0

Indie game developer Edmund McMillen hosted a Reddit AMA today offering some more details about his upcoming game Mewgenics. For starters, the Steam release date for this turn-based cat-breeding RPG has been slightly delayed to February 10. The game was first announced all the way back in 2012 and had most recently been slated for a launch some time this year. Part of the long development cycle was so that McMillen could pause to launch Super Meat Boy Forever, the sequel to his Super Meat Boy platforming hit from 2010. Gamers may also know McMillen for The Binding of Isaac, which has had some notable crossovers with titles like Balatro in recent years.

Other tidbits from the AMA include the promise that McMillen already has DLC ideas, so expect to have additional content release after the base game is available. Although there doesn’t seem to be any lack of replayability in Mewgenics; McMillen said “I currently have 300+ hours across 2 saves and have only beaten the game on one save so far.” There is also a plan to have some console versions of the game, although likely not until much later next year at the soonest, the dev added.

Chrome for iPhone rolling out built-in Gemini integration

0

After teasing in September, Google Chrome for iOS is now more widely rolling out a built-in Gemini experience.

Once available, the icon at the left of the address bar changes from the Google Lens camera to a page icon badged by the Gemini spark. The “Page tools” sheet that slides up has two options: “Search screen” (Lens) and “Ask Gemini.”

Tapping brings an “Ask Gemini” window with a four color glow for a few seconds with the URL of your current page attached. Tap the ‘x’ to stop sharing the page. There are also shortcuts like:

  • Summarize page: Tap to get key takeaways and insights that help you understand any topic.
  • Create FAQ about this topic: Tap to get FAQs based on info from this page and similar sites.

Other example queries include:

  • Explain a complex topic in a different way
  • Help you test your knowledge of a new subject you’re learning
  • Modify a recipe to meet dietary needs
  • Compare information or make recommendations based on your preferences

The response floats above the page, which remains visible in the background. You can start a new chat from the top-right corner, while there’s an overflow menu that leverages Liquid Glass. Visually, Gemini in Chrome on iOS is basically the Android overlay design. There is no model picker.

At the moment, Gemini in Chrome on the iPhone and iPad is supported in the US when the browser’s language is set to English. You have to sign in to Chrome and this is not available in Incognito mode.

Important: Gemini in Chrome is not available to all users at this time. We’re gradually releasing Gemini in Chrome, so it might not be available to you just yet.

We’re seeing it more widely available with Chrome 143 for iOS. The release notes also highlight:

  • Easily checkout using your biometrics instead of a CVC code when you shop online.
  • Get the most out of Chrome with helpful tips on the new tab page.
  • Stability and performance improvements.
