Use this hack to get a year of Peacock for $49 ahead of Black Friday

0

If you’ve wanted to check out The Paper or any other new NBC show on Peacock, you can do so now while spending less thanks to this hack. Walmart, believe it or not, comes into play here: the retailer is offering Walmart+ subscriptions for half off right now, bringing the cost down to $49 for your first year. Thanks to a streaming benefit for subscribers, you can then sign up for Peacock at no extra cost.

Walmart+ subscribers are able to choose between a Peacock Premium or a Paramount+ Essential subscription. Considering Peacock premium would run you $110 for the year on its own, signing up for Walmart+ while this discount is available gets you access to the streaming service for less than half the normal cost.

$49 at Walmart

Just about every major streaming service has raised its prices in the last year, including HBO Max, Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV and YouTube TV, so saving some money on one of them just might be worth the effort. Cord cutting is not nearly as affordable as it used to be, so finding a deal like this is pretty helpful.

Walmart+ itself offers myriad additional benefits like early access to Black Friday deals, free shipping on orders over $35, discounts on gas, free online veterinary care and more. Earlier this year, Walmart+ subscribers got first dibs on the Nintendo Switch 2 at the retailer. You can also use that free shipping to take advantage of Walmart’s drone delivery program in a handful of select cities.

Google Fi rolling out AI-enhanced audio to Android, iPhone

0

As announced last month, Google Fi Wireless is now rolling out AI-enhanced audio on Android and iOS.

While Google Fi just gained HD and HD+ calling, AI-enhanced audio comes into play when you’re talking to someone on a landline or “older device.” Google AI is leveraged to filter out distracting background noise and clarify speech on both ends.

The goal is “more natural-sounding conversations.” For example:

AI-enhanced audio is available on iOS and Android 11+. It’s enabled by default, and you can turn it off from the Google Fi app. Select your account (if you’re in a group) and scroll down to Phone settings for “Call quality” above Wi-Fi calling.

On Android, the Phone by Google calling screen will note “AI-enhanced by Google Fi” when active. Additionally, a silent alert in the notification shade explains how there’s “AI-enhanced audio on this call” with a brief explanation and link to settings.

Setting changes take effect on the next call. On the privacy front: “This feature processes audio on Google servers to enhance your call quality. Learn more about Google’s Privacy Policy.”

We’re seeing this live with version 146 (on Android) of the Google Fi app.

Mass. casino winner: Small bet wins jackpot prize

0

A bet on the slot machine game “Lightning Link” won a Massachusetts casino player a jackpot prize.

On Oct. 12, a $2.50 wager was placed on the slot machine game at “Lightning Link” at Encore Boston Harbor to win the jackpot prize of $16,821.47.

The casino, which is located in Everett, has more than 2,700 slot machines and more than 175 table games.

Players must be 21 years or older.

Encore Boston Harbor set a new record for jackpot payouts in August, distributing more than $46.3 million to lucky winners across its gaming floor.

The casino paid out $46,395,287.66 across 16,628 total jackpots during the month, marking the highest payout total in the venue’s history. The vast majority came from slot machine wins, with 16,490 slot jackpots totaling over $45.3 million.

Table games contributed 135 jackpots worth approximately $1 million, while sports betting accounted for three jackpots totaling $15,296.53.

The single largest winner in August hit a $134,778.50 jackpot from a $225 bet on a slot machine called “Huff n More Puff” on August 2.

The record August figures represented a significant increase from July, when the casino paid out $39,627,206.20 across 15,101 jackpots. The payout amounts have remained high in subsequent months, with September seeing $42,122,246.90 distributed across 15,187 jackpots and October reaching $43,173,022.60 across 15,827 wins.

a16z-backed super PAC is targeting Alex Bores, sponsor of New York’s AI safety bill — he says bring it on

0

A pro-AI super PAC backed by Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI President Greg Brockman has chosen New York Assembly member Alex Bores — and his congressional bid — as its first target.

The PAC, dubbed Leading the Future, formed in August with a more than $100 million commitment to support policymakers with a light-touch — or a no-touch — approach to AI regulation. And that means going after policymakers who want to regulate AI. The super PAC has backing from a number of other prominent leaders in tech, including Palantir co-founder and 8VC managing partner Joe Lonsdale as well as AI search engine Perplexity.

“I appreciate how straightforward they’re being about it,” Bores told a room of journalists Monday evening at a Journalism Workshop on AGI impacts and governance in Washington, D.C. “When they say, ‘Hey, we’re going to spend millions against Alex because he might regulate Big Tech and put basic guardrails on AI,’ I just basically forward that to my constituents.”

Bores, who’s running to represent the state’s 12th Congressional District, said AI anxieties are on the rise among his constituents, who worry about everything from data centers pushing up utility bills and worsening climate change to chatbots impacting kids’ mental health and automation transforming the job market.

Bores is the chief sponsor of New York’s bipartisan RAISE Act, which requires large AI labs to have a safety plan in place to prevent critical harms, follow their own safety plan, and disclose critical safety incidents, like bad actors stealing an AI model. The bill also prohibits AI firms from releasing models with unreasonable risks of critical harm and imposes civil penalties of up to $30 million if companies fail to live up to these standards. The legislation is currently awaiting Gov. Kathy Hochul’s signature.

Bores said while drafting and redrafting the bill, he consulted with the large AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Those negotiations led to the removal of provisions like third-party safety audits, which he says the industry refused to accept. Nevertheless, the RAISE Act, and Bores himself, appears to have incurred the ire of Silicon Valley.

Zac Moffatt and Josh Vlasto, heads of Leading the Future, told Politico that they would work on a multibillion-dollar effort to sink Bores’ campaign.

Techcrunch event

October 13-15, 2026

In a statement sent to TechCrunch, they accused Bores of advancing “ideological and politically motivated legislation that would handcuff not only New York’s, but the entire country’s ability to lead on AI jobs and innovation.” The pair said “bills like the RAISE Act threaten American competitiveness, limit economic growth, leave users exposed to foreign influence and manipulation, and undermine our national security.”

“The RAISE Act is a clear example of the patchwork, uninformed, and bureaucratic state laws that would slow American progress and open the door for China to win the global race for AI leadership,” Moffatt and Vlasto said in the emailed statement. “America needs one clear and consistent national regulatory framework for AI that strengthens our economy, creates jobs for American workers, supports vibrant communities, and protects users.”

Many in Silicon Valley have pushed to prohibit states from passing regulation that relates to AI. Earlier this year, a provision blocking state AI laws was slipped into the federal budget bill and was later removed. Now, lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz are seeking to resurrect it through other legislative avenues.

Bores said he is concerned such a movement could continue to gain legs at a time when the federal government has passed no meaningful AI regulation. Where federal government moves slow, states are like startups — they can function as policy laboratories and move fast to test what works.

“The question should be, has Congress solved the problem?” Bores said. “If Congress solves the problem, then it can tell the states to get out of the way, but if they’re not going to pass a bill that’s actually addressing any of the problems…and then [saying that states can’t do anything] that just doesn’t make sense to me.”

Bores also noted he has been in contact with policymakers in other states to work on standardizing legislation, which could combat Silicon Valley’s “patchwork” objection. He also believes that lawmakers should ensure there are no redundancies with the EU AI Act.

Bores emphasized that AI regulation isn’t meant to limit innovation, and that he has rejected bills that he thinks would have unintended consequences for the industry.

“Having basic rules of the road, literal or metaphorical, is actually a very pro-innovation stance if done well,” Bores said. “I fundamentally believe that the AI that wins is going to be the AI that is trustworthy. And the pushback from industry to say that government has no role in establishing that trust is one that I think you’re seeing people reject at every level.”

Google Calendar now lets you schedule tasks

0

Productivity setups are a personal thing. Some people swear by to-do lists and apps, some people like scheduling and planners. For those in the latter camp, Google has made a minor but valuable addition to the Workspace suite. Going forward, you’ll be able to block off segments of time in Google Calendar for working on specific tasks. You can add descriptions and set your preferences for that task in regard to do not disturb and visibility settings. It’s a nice step up from scheduling meetings with yourself when you have to focus on a particular assignment (which several of us at Engadget have been known to do).

Example of how to schedule a task in Google Calendar

Google

This option began appearing for Google’s Rapid Release domains earlier in November, while standard release domains will see a gradual release beginning December 1. Once it’s fully rolled out, it will be available by default, whether you’re a Google Workspaces customer or just using a personal Google account.

Springfield considers ban of kratom, citing concerns of new addiction wave

0

SPRINGFIELD — Five months after ending the sale of synthetic marijuana, the City Council is turning its attention to kratom, concerned it could set off a new wave of opioid addiction.

Kratom in its natural form is a leaf that, depending on the dose, can act as a stimulant or like an opioid. About a decade ago, people started extracting one of the alkaloids, called mitragynine, creating a more concentrated substance that is more dangerous and addictive, said Dr. C. Michael White, a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy.

“What is important to know about 7-OH is (it’s) equally as potent as morphine,” White said during a presentation to City Council members Monday. “It has the same addictive potential as morphine, as oxycodone, as all the traditional opioids.”

It also creates a euphoric effect similar to heroin. For some using kratom as a treatment for addiction, it instead caused them to relapse into uncontrolled substance use, White said.

Kratom is unregulated in Massachusetts, although multiple towns and cities have started to ban it from the shelves of smoke shops and convenience stores. A bill also has been filed in the Legislature that could result in a statewide ban.

“We have the opportunity to get ahead of it,” said City Councilor Sean Curran, who is spearheading the effort to ban it in the city. He wants to regulate it as soon as possible to keep it out of the hands of teenagers, instead of waiting for the state to take action.

The city’s Law Department has drafted a law that would ban the manufacture, sale and distribution of all kratom products. It is now considering modifying the draft, after learning that low-dose products do help some people with chronic pain and recovery from opioid addiction.

“For those people who ended up converting over to leaf kratom products, they have felt the leaf kratom products were giving them a better ability to function,” White said.

The leaf type product is also beneficial for the more than 1 million people who are uninsured or underinsured, he said. But, he added the risk of using the highly-concentrated products is worse than any benefits they provide.

The City Council will need to take two votes to pass an ordinance. If it is not adopted by the end of the year, it will die, but could be revived by the council in the next session.

“We want to act really quickly, deliberately but quickly,” Curran said.

John Shinholster, director of advocacy for American Veterans for Kratom Safe, drove from Virginia on Monday to attend the City Council’s health and human services meeting where the ordinance was discussed. He urged city councilors to rethink a complete ban on the product, saying it helps people battling addiction.

“The bottom line is, it is one of the best harm-reduction products out there,” he said.

White instead recommended the ordinance ban products that have more than 2% of the concentrated 7-OH — and similar compounds MGM-15 and MGM-16 — as well as permitting items made out of the natural leaf.

The ordinance also could ban vaping products and any chemical that is sugared or flavored to appeal to children, he said.

If the city wanted to go a step further, it could require distributors to register if they are going to sell products with small amounts of 7-OH. Products also could go through a testing process, White said.

“Science is moving along so fast, we struggle to capture it,” said City Solicitor Stephen Buoniconti, adding that it is a little like the Wild West to keep up with different types of synthetic drugs that are being manufactured.

Since creating an ordinance on synthetic marijuana, the city already has received letters threatening lawsuits over the ban, he said.

Luminar is fighting with its biggest customer as bankruptcy threat looms

0

Swedish automaker Volvo has cancelled a five-year-old contract with Luminar, the latest escalation in an increasingly-ugly brawl between the lidar sensor company and its biggest customer.

The fight is happening during an existential moment for Luminar. The company recently defaulted on several of its loans. While it’s working with those lenders on a resolution, Luminar has warned investors it may have to declare bankruptcy.

To stave that off, Luminar recently laid off 25% of its staff and is trying to sell itself — or parts of itself — to potential buyers. One of them is Luminar founder Austin Russell, who resigned from the CEO role in May during an ethics inquiry. Luminar is also being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, recent filings reveal.

Volvo is not just a Luminar customer. The two companies have spent much of the last decade working together. Volvo invested in Luminar and helped the Florida-based startup get into some of its first production vehicles. (Neither company immediately responded to requests for comment.)

The relationship has been mutually beneficial. Luminar’s tech gave Volvo the confidence to dish out big promises about making the roads safer by offering automated driving features. Volvo gave Luminar credibility ahead of a 2020 SPAC merger that made Russell one of the youngest self-made billionaires ever.

But Luminar has faced challenges as a public company. It struggled to diversify away from Volvo, and in 2024 cut a fifth of its staff while deciding to outsource manufacturing of its sensors. Then, in May of this year, Russell abruptly resigned as Luminar revealed its board had opened a “code of business conduct and ethics” inquiry.

The fight with Volvo bubbled to the surface on October 31.

Techcrunch event

San Francisco
|
October 13-15, 2026

The company told shareholders in a regulatory filing on that day that Volvo decided to no longer make Luminar’s “Iris” lidar a standard sensor on its EX90 and ES90 vehicles. Volvo also told Luminar that it had “deferred” the decision of whether to include its next-generation “Halo” sensor in the Swedish automaker’s future vehicles.

Luminar said in the filing that it had “made a claim against Volvo for significant damages” and “suspended further commitments of Iris” for the automaker.

“The Company is in discussions with Volvo concerning the dispute; however, there can be no assurance that the dispute will be resolved favorably or at all,” Luminar wrote.

Volvo’s decisions were not just a threat to Luminar’s revenue — they also had knock-on effects for Luminar. In the October filing, Luminar said it stopped spending money on Iris sensors for Volvo, and in turn, the supplier that makes the sensors claimed this was a breach of their agreement.

If you’re on the hunt for solid tech deals, Engadget has you covered. We’ve collected the best Black Friday deals on tech you can get right now, and we’ll continue to update this post as we get closer to the big day at the end of November. Note that you probably have the best chance of snagging record-low prices when we get to about one week before Thanksgiving, but these deals available now are worth considering.

Table of contents

Black Friday deals: Engadget’s top picks

Image for the mini product module

Apple AirPods 4 for $85 (34 percent off): These are the most affordable AirPods you can get, and the latest model has been substantially improved over the previous. They have a better fit and noticeably better sound quality than their predecessor, plus some advanced features previously only found on pricer models.

Apple AirTags (four pack) for $65 (34 percent off): iPhone users who frequently misplace things should invest in a few AirTags. Slip them into your wallet, bag, jacket and other belongings to keep track of their locations in the Find My app. Just make sure that, if you’re going to attach one to your keys, you also pick up an AirTag holder to go along with it.

LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon A New Hope 25th Anniversary Collectable 75375 for $68 (20 percent off): This is a set that any Star Wars fan will love to build and then love to display once it’s complete. The 921-piece set features a fully-detailed Millennium Falcone, buildable stand and nameplate. It’s one of many Lego Black Friday deals you can get right now.

Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones for $248 ($158 off): While the new XM6 headphones have replaced these as Sony’s flagship cans, that doesn’t mean the XM5 aren’t worth buying. They were our top pick for the best wireless headphones for years before the XM6 came around, and they still have excellent ANC, great sound quality, long battery life, a comfortable fit and handy extra features like multipoint connectivity.

Bose QuietComfort headphones for $170 (51 percent off): These noise-cancelling headphones have a comfortable (albeit a bit boring) design, an “Aware” mode that lets you hear more of your surroundings when you need to and up to 24 hours of battery life.

Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle for $499: Black Friday Nintendo sales were announced recently and, unsurprisingly, there won’t be many true deals out there this year. There are no straight discounts on the Switch 2 console, so your best bet is to pick up a bundle that saves you some cash on a Switch 2 game. One of the best is the Mario Kart Wold bundle, but Pokémon fans should consider the Pokémon Legends: Z-A bundle, too.

Black Friday deals under $50

Image for the mini product module

Blink Mini 2 (2 pack) for $28 (60 percent off): if you want to keep an eye on your home when you’re away, it’ll be hard to find a security camera as convenient and as affordable as a Blink Mini 2. Yes, the company just came out the with 2K+ version, but that will be overkill for most people. The Blink Mini 2 gets the job done by recording 1080p video, sending you motion alerts and supporting two-way talk in case you want to chat with your pets while you’re out. Note that these are wired cameras, so they’re more conveniently used indoors — unless you pick up the necessary weather-resistant adapter for outdoor use.

Philips fabric shaver for $13 (32 percent off): Consider this the Black Friday tech deal you didn’t know you needed. If you have shirts, sweaters, pants, even blankets that have pilled over time, this handy little fabric shaver can get them looking more like new again. I bought this on a whim after wishing I could refresh some of my most-loved wardrobe staples without spending hours pulling pills off myself. Philips’ fabric shaver has delivered and then some, and my clothes look much fresher than before.

Jisulife Life 7 handheld fan for $25 (14 percent off): This handy little fan is a must-have if you life in a warm climate or have a tropical vacation planned anytime soon. It can be used as a table or handheld fan and even be worn around the neck so you don’t have to hold it at all. Its 5,000 mAh battery allows it to last hours on a single charge, and the small display in the middle of the fan’s blades show its remaining battery level.

Leebin 2025 electric spin scrubber for $40 (43 percent off, Prime exclusive): This weird little scrubber makes cleaning my bathroom and shower much less of a pain. Just choose the brush head you need for your job and the rotating head takes care of most of the hard work. I love the adjustable handle, which extends from 12 to 50 inches so you can get into hard-to-reach places without breaking a sweat.

Ring Video Doorbell for $50 (50 percent off): This is the most affordable Ring doorbell and it includes a battery that’s rechargeable via USB-C. Once installed, it will send you alerts when motion is detected near your door, and you can use the Live View and two-way talk features to interact with visitors without opening your door.

Monarch Money budgeting app (one year) for $50 (50 percent off with code MONARCHVIP): One of our favorite budgeting apps, Monarch Money gives you a lot of control over the organization of your funds. There’s a helpful goals feature for when you’re planning out big purchases or financial milestones you want to hit, and we found the month-in-review recap it provides to be more thorough than other budgeting apps we tried. There’s even Zillow integration for folks looking to buy a home.

Black Friday Apple deals

Image for the mini product module

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, M4) for $749 ($250 off): Our top pick for the best laptop you can get, the M4 MacBook Air will be plenty of power for most people in a convenient, premium package. It’s thin and light as ever, with an excellent keyboard and trackpad, plus enough battery life to get you through a whole day of work, video calls and more.

Apple Watch SE 3 for $200 ($50 off): The SE has been our top pick for the best Apple Watch for those on a budget, and the latest model only solidifies that further. It has the same chipset found in the latest flagship Apple Watches, fast-charging capabilities, an always-on display and most of the same activity-tracking features you’ll find in more expensive model.

Apple Mac Mini M4 for $499 ($100 off): Desktop users looking for an upgrade should consider the latest Mac Mini, which runs on the M4 chip and 16GB of RAM as standard in the base configuration. This version has a smaller design that takes up less space, front-facing USB-C ports and a headphone jack, plus Thunderbolt 5 support.

Black Friday smart home and kitchen deals

Image for the mini product module

iRobot Roomba 104 Vac Robot Vacuum for $150 (40 percent off): This is an updated version of our favorite budget robot vacuum and it will make an excellent choice for anyone who has never used one of these devices before, or a gift for a new homeowner. Not only is the iRobot mobile app super easy to use, but this machine has strong suction power and good battery life, plus it will automatically return to its docking station when it needs a power-up.

Ninja Dual-Zone air fryer (10-quart) for $180 (22 percent off): If you cook for large crowds on Thanksgiving and other occasions, this is the air fryer to get. Not only is it a large, 10-quart capacity model, but it also has two separate cooking areas. You can crisp up potatoes on one side and brussel sprouts on the other with no issues. Use the Smart Finish feature to cook two separate foods in different ways and have them both be done at the same time, or Match Cook to copy the cooking method in both chambers.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro for $300 ($100 off): One of the most versatile air fryers out there, this Breville machine not only air fries, but also bakes, roasts, toasts, dehydrates, reheats and more. It also has a large capacity that can cook a 14-pound turkey or a tray of muffins with ease.

Dyson 360 Vis Nav robot vacuum for $400 ($600 off): This is one of the best robot vacuums you can get, period. It doesn’t have a self-emptying base, but its superior suction power almost makes up for that. It’s one of the strongest robot vacuums I’ve ever tested, and it has excellent obstacle avoidance. The latter means you will rarely, if ever, have to attend to it getting caught on the edge of a carpet or getting stuck under a piece of furniture. If a cordless stick vacuum is what you’re looking for, don’t forget to check out all of the other Dyson Black Friday deals.

Samsung 65-inch Frame Pro smart TV for $1,598 (24 percent off): The latest version of Samsung’s art TV, the Frame Pro lets you show artwork on the screen when you’re not watching a sports game or binge-watching your favorite show. It supports 4K content, VRR gaming at up to 4K 144Hz and runs on Samsung’s NQ4 AI Gen3 processor. Also available at Best Buy.

The top pick from our friends at Yahoo Tech has been heavily discounted in this early Black Friday sale. You can pick up the EcoFlow Delta Pro 3 for $1,400 off, down to $2,299, or the power station with an extra battery bundled in for $2,699 off, down to $3,599.

Also available at Anker.

SanDisk microSD Express card (256GB) for $60 (12 percent off): If you have a Switch 2, no regular microSD card will do if you want to expand the console’s storage. You need a newer microSD Express card, and currently there are only a handful on the market. We did some testing to find the best microSD Express card for the Switch 2 and found that performance was, in general, very similar amongst all the readily available cards. We recommend getting whichever fits within your budget at the capacity you want.

It makes a great all-in-one gift for the budding videographer or aspiring influencer in your life, or a solid addition to your own camera kit. Also available at GoPro.

Additionally, a FAB menu is now leveraged for Event, Task, Out of office, and Birthday creation.

Widgets will get a pill-shaped button in the top-right corner, while most views drop the two-column layout.

Like Gmail, Google Chat makes use of a chat app bar and places the list of messages in a container. The floating toolbar leverages a pill to highlight what tab you’re currently viewing, while the chat interface places the ‘plus’ menu in a vertical pill.

When something is backing up, there’s a wavy progress indicator.

More

The Google TV app has a short bottom bar with a white accent color that is also used in three of the four tabs for the search pill. In the For you tab, that button is themed based on the media carousel.

Meanwhile, the remote gets updated button shapes. There’s also a morphing split button at the top for the device menu.

More
