Thousands of Indian bank transfer records found online

0

A data spill from an unsecured cloud server has exposed hundreds of thousands of sensitive bank transfer documents in India, revealing account numbers, transaction figures, and individuals’ contact details.

Researchers at cybersecurity firm UpGuard discovered in late August a publicly accessible Amazon-hosted storage server containing 273,000 PDF documents relating to bank transfers of Indian customers.

The exposed files contained completed transaction forms intended for processing via the National Automated Clearing House, or NACH, a centralized system used by banks in India to facilitate high-volume recurring transactions, such as salaries, loan repayments, and utility payments.

The data was linked to at least 38 different banks and financial institutions, the researchers told TechCrunch.

It’s not clear why the data was left publicly exposed and accessible to the internet, though security lapses of this nature are not uncommon due to misconfigurations and human error.

But it remains unclear who caused the data spill, who secured it, and who is ultimately responsible for alerting those whose personal data was exposed.

Data secured, but nobody accepts blame

In its blog post detailing its findings, the UpGuard researchers said that out of a sample of 55,000 documents, more than half of the files mentioned the name of Indian lender Aye Finance, which had filed for a $171 million IPO last year. The Indian state-owned State Bank of India was the next institution to appear by frequency in the sample documents, according to the researchers.

After discovering the exposed data, UpGuard’s researchers notified Aye Finance through its corporate, customer care, and grievance redressal email addresses. The researchers also alerted the National Payments Corporation of India, or NPCI, the government body responsible for managing NACH.

By early September, the researchers said the data was still exposed and that thousands of files were being added to the exposed server daily.

UpGuard said it then alerted India’s computer emergency response team, CERT-In. Shortly afterward, the exposed data was secured, the researchers told TechCrunch.

But nobody seems to want to take responsibility for the security lapse.

When reached for comment, NPCI spokesperson Ankur Dahiya told TechCrunch that the exposed data did not come from its systems.

“A detailed verification and review have confirmed that no data related to NACH mandate information/records from NPCI systems have been exposed/compromised,” the spokesperson said in an email sent to TechCrunch.

Aye Finance co-founder and CEO, Sanjay Sharma did not respond to a request for comment from TechCrunch. The State Bank of India also did not respond to a request for comment.

Call-recording app Neon goes offline after security flaw uncovered

0

Neon is an call-recording app that pays users for access to the audio, which the app in turn sells to AI companies for training their models. Since its launch last week, it quickly rose in popularity, but the service was taken offline today. TechCrunch reported that it found a security flaw that allowed any logged-in user to access other accounts’ phone numbers, the phone numbers called, call recordings and transcripts.

TechCrunch said that it contacted Neon founder Alex Kiam about the issue. “Kiam told TechCrunch later Thursday that he took down the app’s servers and began notifying users about pausing the app, but fell short of informing his users about the security lapse,” the publication reported. The app went dark “soon after” TC contacted Kiam. Neon does not appear to have a timeline about if or when the service will resume or what additional security protections it may add.

The full report from TechCrunch is here and certainly worth reading if you’ve used Neon.

Nothing Ear (3) are now available for $179

0

Following their announcement earlier this month, Nothing Ear (3) are now available for purchase.

Nothing Ear (3) is the fourth generation of the brand’s earbuds, and they’re a solid option in the space as we explained in our review this week.

What’s new?

Nothing Ear (3) has a familiar overall design, but with a case now made partially from metal. The earbuds themselves feature longer battery life, as well as a new sound profile. The case also now integrates a “Super Mic” that lets you use the case as a handheld microphone for calls, which Nothing says is ideal for better noise cancellation.

Like prior generations, Nothing Ear (3) still undercuts the competition in price, at least a little bit. At $179, they’re cheaper than Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Pixel Buds Pro 2, as well as other alternatives. That’s while still supporting features like Android’s Fast Pair.

Nothing Ear (3) is available for purchase today from Nothing’s website as well as Amazon. Pre-orders have already shipped, but new buyers can expect deliveries as soon as early next week.

Microsoft cuts cloud services to Israeli military unit over Palestinian surveillance

0

Microsoft has cut off the Israel Ministry of Defense’s access to some of its tech and services after an internal investigation found the organization appeared to be using its tech to store surveillance data on phone calls made by Palestinians.

The tech giant announced on Thursday that it made the decision to “cease and disable” certain subscriptions from the Israeli military. This affects subscriptions to Azure cloud storage and certain AI services.

“We do not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. “We have applied this principle in every country around the world, and we have insisted on it repeatedly for more than two decades. This is why we explained publicly on August 15 that Microsoft’s standard terms of service prohibit the use of our technology for mass surveillance of civilians.”

Microsoft informed Israel of its decision last week, according to The Guardian.

The decision follows Microsoft’s ongoing review of the matter, which started in August. The investigation was sparked by a story in The Guardian that reported that Unit 8200, the elite Israel military intelligence unit, was using Azure cloud storage to house data on phone calls obtained through the surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

In his blog post, Smith also said the company appreciated The Guardian’s initial reporting. Smith wrote that without it, they wouldn’t have known to look into the matter, as due to customer privacy rights, they can’t access a customer’s content.

“As employees, we all have a shared interest in privacy protection, given the business value it creates by ensuring our customers can rely on our services with rock solid trust,” Smith wrote.

The company said the review is ongoing but declined to comment to TechCrunch regarding what was still under review.

Microsoft has been under fire from both employees and outsiders for its involvement with Israel over the past year. Protests regarding Microsoft’s relationship with Israel broke out at the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in April. In August, several employees staged a sit-in at Smith’s office, forcing a lockdown.

The company has fired multiple employees in recent months for their activism related to Microsoft’s contracts with Israel.

CMF by Nothing is becoming something of its own

0

Operating as a sub-brand of Nothing for the past couple of years, it’s been announced today that what was formerly “CMF by Nothing” is becoming an indepedent subsidiary and India’s first global smartphone company.

CMF by Nothing started operations as a budget-focused sub-brand of the Carl Pei-owned Nothing back in 2023 with a smartwatch and its own earbuds. A year later, the first CMF Phone debuted with an absurdly low $199 price point, and CMF has since continued to put out new, budget-focused hardware ever since.

But, now, CMF is being spun off into its own company.

CMF will ditch the “by Nothing” footnote and become an independent subsidiary of Nothing. The move will see CMF continuing to focus on budget hardware, but more importantly, it will also become the first global smartphone “and smart hardware” company based in India.

Nothing is spinning off CMF with the help of Optiemus, which will also be working with Nothing to use India as a global production and export hub for both Nothing products and CMF products.

Meanwhile, CMF is gearing up for its next product launch in CMF Headphone Pro, which have shown to still be carrying the “CMF by Nothing” branding.

CMF’s full press release on the spin-off follows:

CMF to become India’s first global smartphone and smart hardware company, starting with a strategic joint venture with Optiemus

India to become CMF’s global headquarters with end-to-end smartphone operations. A brand built in India, for the world.

Gurugram, India – 25th September 2025 – London-based technology company Nothing today announced that CMF, previously a sub-brand, will operate as an independent subsidiary, with India to become its base for operations, R&D, and manufacturing. This milestone demonstrates India’s capability to anchor and scale next-generation consumer technology brands.

Alongside this evolution, Nothing and leading Indian electronics manufacturer  Optiemus Infracom limited today announced a strategic manufacturing joint venture to establish India as a global production and export hub for Nothing and CMF products. The joint venture marks a significant investment in India’s technology manufacturing capabilities, reinforcing Nothing’s support for the Government of India’s Make in India initiative.

Through this next chapter, CMF will pursue its vision of establishing India’s first truly global consumer technology brand – built from India, to the world. As part of the joint venture, Nothing & Optiemus will invest over USD $100 million and create more than 1,800+ jobs in India over the next three years. To date, Nothing has already invested over USD $200 million in the country.

Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, said: “India will play a key role in shaping the future of the global smartphone industry. CMF has been well received by the market since we launched it two years ago. With our end-to-end capabilities, we are uniquely positioned to now build it into India’s first truly global smartphone brand. Our joint venture with Optiemus is a key milestone toward making that vision a reality.”

Optiemus brings world-class engineering and production capabilities. Their proven expertise in supporting global brands and establishing robust manufacturing and export opportunities further strengthens India’s position as a global hub for electronics manufacturing.

Ashok Gupta, Executive Chairman, Optiemus said: “We are extremely excited about this partnership with Nothing; it will allow us to further strengthen our world-class manufacturing capabilities for the products of today and tomorrow. Global brands choosing India to build is a testament to the strength of the Indian ecosystem and the vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. This partnership goes beyond high-tech manufacturing—it will empower us to create export-ready products that will be designed in India, showcasing the innovation and talent of our people to the world in the coming years.”

This announcement follows recent strategic moves that have positioned India at the centre of CMF’s global operations, including relocating CMF’s global marketing to India and appointing senior leaders such as Himanshu Tandon as VP of CMF Business. Nothing also recently announced its USD $200M Series C funding at a $1.3B valuation led by Tiger Global, and with Nikhil Kamath joining as one of the new investors.

Worcester councilor decries ‘bogus charges’ at court hearing over ICE arrest

0

A judge announced on Thursday shew will review body camera footage and arguments before she rules on whether to dismiss charges against a Worcester City Councilor who confronted federal immigration agents and police officers during an operation on May 8.

District 5 Councilor Etel Haxhiaj was charged on June 4 with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery on a police officer and one common law violation for interfering with a police officer.

The charges stem against Haxhiaj’s actions on May 8, where she confronted and protested Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Eureka Street in Worcester. The agents were arresting 40-year-old Rosane Ferreira-De Oliveira, a Brazilian mother of three.

Haxhiaj sought to dismiss the charges in a hearing on Thursday morning.

The prosecution, represented by Northwest District Attorney’s office stated that there was probable cause to move to trial. Haxhiaj’s lawyer, Elizabeth K. Halloran argued that the body camera footage from police shows that Haxhiaj did not intentionally try to touch Police Officer Shauna McGuirk.

Judge Janet J. McGuiggan ruled that she would take time to review the body camera footage featuring Haxhiaj before deciding whether to dismiss the charges.

As she exited the court into the rain, Haxhiaj was greeted by her supporters.

“We will keep standing up for our neighbors dignity, human rights and constitutional right to due process,” Haxhiaj said. “And no amount of bogus charges or threats will intimidate me or keep me quiet on or off the city council.”

Police body camera footage released by the city featured video of councilor grabbing the 40-year-old’s arm and pleading with the agents not to take her. Two of the ICE agents then flung Haxhiaj off of Ferreira-De Oliveira, as seen in the footage.

Video from Officer Shauna McGuirk’s body camera showed Haxhiaj and Ferreira-De Oliveira’s daughter, Augusta Clara Moura, standing next a gold SUV. Ferreira-De Oliveira was placed inside of the vehicle by ICE agents during the arrest.

In the footage the agents and McGuirk tell both Haxhiaj and Clara Moura to move away from the SUV.

McGuirk then grabbed Clara Moura’s arm, telling her she needed to “come on.” Clara Moura looked down at her arm and responded, “No, no, no, no.”

The officer released her arm and an agent then warned Clara Moura and Haxhiaj that they both could be charged for their actions

“I don’t understand,” Haxhiaj said and told McGuirk that she had the right to be there as a district councilor. Eureka Street is part of Worcester’s District 5.

McGuirk then pulled Haxhiaj away from the vehicle by her back, and Haxhiaj pushed against the officer’s body.

“Do not touch me!” Haxhiaj yelled as she was pulled away from the SUV.

Just four days after the ICE operation, Worcester police filed a criminal complaint against Haxhiaj.

Bossolt requested a show-cause hearing on three charges against Haxhiaj, according to the application. Bossolt requested that the councilor be charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and one count of interfering with a police officer.

“Haxhiaj pushed P.O. McGuirk in the chest,” the filing reads. “Haxhiaj pulled P.O. McGuirk’s arm as she was making an arrest.”

The status hearing for Haxhiaj will coincide with another status hearing for Ashley Spring, a former Worcester School Committee candidate who was charged after they doused water on a police officer during the ICE arrest.

Smartphone maker Nothing to spin off its affordable CMF brand

0

Hardware startup Nothing said Thursday that it plans to make its affordable device brand, CMF, into an independent subsidiary with India serving as its headquarters for manufacturing and R&D.

The company first launched CMF in 2023 with a pair of earbuds and a smartwatch. Since then, it has introduced smartphones under the brand as well.

Nothing said that it is partnering with Indian ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) Optiemus to create a joint venture for manufacturing. While the startup didn’t reveal the ownership structure of this venture, it said that it aims to invest more than $100 million over the next three years, while creating over 1,800 jobs.

The London-based startup, following its $200 million funding round led by Tiger Global, didn’t say how much money from this round will go into setting up this new venture.

Nothing’s decision to choose India as CMF’s operational headquarters makes sense for a few reasons. CMF’s smartphones have been priced under $200, and that is the dominant category in India, with over 42% of phones shipped in Q2 2025 being in the $100-$200 price range, according to IDC.

India has also been Nothing’s strongest market with over 2% market share in smartphones. IDC told TechCrunch via email that Nothing was the fastest-growing brand in the country in Q2 2025, with 85% growth in shipments year over year.

“India will play a key role in shaping the future of the global smartphone industry. CMF has been well-received by the market since we launched it two years ago. With our end-to-end capabilities, we are uniquely positioned to now build it into India’s first truly global smartphone brand. Our joint venture with Optiemus is a key milestone toward making that vision a reality,” Nothing’s CEO Carl Pei said in a statement.

Check out the intricate, inky world of PS5 game Chronoscript: The Endless End

0

One of the surprise announcements during Sony’s State of Play presentation today was the debut of a literary-themed game titled Chronoscript: The Endless End. It’s an action-adventure game with a very cool hand-drawn art aesthetic. Players will navigate the 3-dimensional world of a mysterious manor as well as the 2-dimensional world of illustrated manuscript pages.

The trailer mostly focused on those 2D sections, showing combat and platforming and seriously did I mention the very cool hand-drawn art? I would have been interested in this for the visuals alone, but throw in a story about writers and editors and I’m hooked.

Perhaps fittingly for this writerly endeavor, the game’s publisher is Shueisha, which is a heavyweight in publishing manga, including the popular Shonen Jump. The developer is DeskWorks, and the studio’s also boasted a lovely, illustrative style. We’ll have a little longer to wait before we can dive into the inky world of Chronoscript, however, because this game isn’t expected to arrive on the PlayStation 5 until some time in 2026.
