Jimmy Kimmel addresses Charlie Kirk comments as host returns to late-night show

0

As Jimmy Kimmel returned to late night Tuesday following ABC’s suspension of his show, the host addressed his comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk that led to his program to getting pulled off the air in the first place.

During his opening monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Sept. 24, Kimmel took a moment during a rather upbeat speech to clarify his previous statements on Kirk’s death.

“I do want to make something clear because it’s important to me as a human. And that is, you understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” Kimmel said before choking back tears.

“I posted a message on Instagram of the day he was killed sending love to his family and asking for compassion. And I meant it, and I still do. Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what it was obviously a deeply disturbed individual. That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make,” the host continued. “But I understand that to some that felt either ill-timed or unclear or maybe both. And for those who think I did point a finger. I get why you’re upset. If the situation was reversed, there’s a good chance I’d have felt the same way. I have many friends and family members on the other side who I love and remain close to, even though we don’t agree on politics at all.”

Kimmel added, “I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believed violence was a solution. And it isn’t ever.”

He later recognized the strength of Kirk’s wife, Erika, who openly forgave the man who shot and killed her husband.

“That is an example we should follow,“ Kimmel said. “If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do. There it was. That’s it. A selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply, and I hope it touches many. And if there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that.”

It was revealed Monday that Kimmel would be returning after ABC announced last Wednesday that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was suspended indefinitely because of comments the host previously made about Kirk‘s death.

Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed while at a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Kimmel criticized Republican reactions to the political identity of Tyler Robinson, who has since been charged with killing Kirk. In his opening monologue on Sept. 15, Kimmel said that “we hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

He then cued up footage of a reporter asking Trump how he was holding up while mourning Kirk’s death.

“I think very good,” Trump said, quickly pivoting to talk about the construction of a ballroom at the White House.

“It’s gonna be a beauty,” the president said in the clip.

Trump later commented on Kimmel’s suspension on his social media platform Truth.

“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” Trump wrote. “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT”

Kimmel’s suspension sent shockwaves across social media as various celebrities, many of whom are close to Kimmel, condemned the silencing of the host with some issuing calls to organize against the network’s actions.

“So I’m in a full face of makeup because I was supposed to go over and have a chat with my friend Jimmy Kimmel on his show, but as you have heard by now, the Jimmy Kimmel show has been pulled indefinitely, abruptly, because of the complaints from the Trump administration,” Wanda Sykes, who was booked as a guest on Kimmel’s show before the ABC decision was announced, said in an Instagram video. “So let’s see. (President Donald Trump) didn’t end the Ukraine War or solve Gaza within his first week. But he did end freedom of speech within his first year. Hey, for those of you who pray, now’s the time to do it. Love you, Jimmy.”

“Night of the Museum” star Ben Stiller reshared an X post sharing the news with the caption, “This isn’t right,” while “Community” actress Alison Brie wrote, “This is unreal. And very scary,” on her Instagram story. The Screen Actors Guild also condemned Kimmel’s suspension.

“Our society depends on freedom of expression,” the labor union said in a statement posted to Instagram. “Suppression of free speech and retaliation for speaking out on significant issues of public concern run counter to the fundamental rights we all rely on.”

SAG also called the suspension of Kimmel and the show “the type of suppression and retaliation that endangers everyone’s freedoms.”

Disney and ABC executives reportedly negotiated Kimmel’s return for several days before announcing the resolution, the Associated Press reported.

Tuesday night’s guests of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” were actor Glen Powell with musical guest Sarah McLachlan. The singer previously canceled her performance at her Lilith Fair documentary premiere in solidarity in support of free speech.

Remembering Sonny Curtis, singer and ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ theme song writer : NPR

0

Prolific singer and songwriter Sonny Curtis has died. He wrote and performed “Love Is All Around,” the theme song for The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

If you were watching TV back in the 1970s, you may recognize this song.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONNY CURTIS SONG, “LOVE IS ALL AROUND”)

KELLY: “Love Is All Around” was the theme song for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” a sitcom about a 30-something woman who worked in television news.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “LOVE IS ALL AROUND”)

SONNY CURTIS: (Singing) Love is all around, no need to waste it. You can never tell. Why don’t you take it? You might just make it after all.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

That voice you hear is Sonny Curtis, who also wrote the song. Curtis was an important figure in rock and roll and country music. He died last week at the age of 88.

KELLY: As a teenager, he got his start playing guitar with Buddy Holly, even joining the future star on some of his earliest recording sessions.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “ROCK AROUND WITH OLLIE VEE”)

BUDDY HOLLY: (Singing) Well, we’re going to rock it to the rhythm and the blues tonight. Rock ’cause everything going to be all right. ‘Cause tonight we’re going to rock to the rhythm and the blues.

KELLY: Curtis would join Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets and continued with the group after Holly died in a plane crash in 1959.

SUMMERS: Through his seven-decade career in music, Curtis wrote hundreds of songs, including the 1961 Everly Brothers hit “Walk Right Back.”

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “WALK RIGHT BACK”)

THE EVERLY BROTHERS: (Singing) Walk right back to me this minute. Bring your love to me, don’t send it. I’m so lonesome every day.

SUMMERS: One of his best-known songs is “I Fought The Law.” It was popularized by the Bobby Fuller Four in 1966.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “I FOUGHT THE LAW”)

THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR: (Singing) I’m breaking rocks in the hot sun. I fought the law and the law won. I fought the law and the law won

KELLY: Such a good song. It was covered by a lot of artists over the years, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Clash.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “I FOUGHT THE LAW”)

THE CLASH: (Singing) I left my baby, and it feels so bad. I guess my race is run. She’s the best girl that I ever had. I fought the law and the law won.

KELLY: Sonny Curtis was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of The Crickets. He died last week in Nashville.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “I FOUGHT THE LAW”)

THE CLASH: (Singing) Robbing people with a six-gun. I fought the law and the law won. I fought the law and the law won

OpenAI is building five new Stargate data centers with Oracle and SoftBank

0

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it plans to build five new AI data centers across the United States with partners Oracle and SoftBank through its Stargate project. The new data centers will bring Stargate’s planned capacity to seven gigawatts — enough energy to power more than five million homes.

Three of the new sites are being developed with Oracle. They’re located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and an undisclosed location in the Midwest. The other two sites are being developed with SoftBank, with one in Lordstown, Ohio and the other in Milam County, Texas.

The new Stargate AI data centers are part of OpenAI’s massive infrastructure buildout, as the company works to train and serve more powerful AI models. On Monday, OpenAI said it would receive a $100 billion investment from Nvidia to buy the chipmaker’s AI processors and build out even more AI data centers.

Google AI Mode now speaks Spanish

0

Google’s AI Mode is continuing its rapid global growth. Today, the company announced that this addition to Google Search is rolling out in Spanish. The new option is available in all countries that support AI Mode. The move will allow Spanish speakers around the world to engage with this AI chatbot in their language of choice when asking more complicated questions than a search engine can typically answer well.

The proliferation of this AI enhancement to Google’s traditional search has happened at a break-neck pace. AI Mode was first introduced in March and then made available across the US in May. The first language expansion came earlier this month with the addition of AI Mode in Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese.

How to add contacts to the ‘Do Not Disturb’ allowlist on Pixel

0

Do Not Disturb will block everyone and everything unless you tell your Pixel not to, including important contacts. Here’s how to whitelist certain people and add them to your allowlist so they can reach you while Do Not Disturb is active.

At this point, Do Not Disturb has become a staple feature of every Android and Apple device. The tool essentially blocks all notifications from alerting you, whether that’s through vibration or notification “dings.” On the Pixel series, they still appear on the lock screen, but they’re limited and don’t become a distraction.

There’s a lot to customize about Do Not Disturb mode on Pixel, but one of the best features is the filter function, which acts as an allowlist for apps and contacts. People, apps, and alarms can be exceptions. A filtered notification or call/message gets priority and appears even if DND is on.

Allowlisting every app and contact in your phone is counterintuitive, so the best way to do it is by selecting emergency contacts and those you’d want to hear from, even if you’re trying to focus or stay off your device.

How to add do not disturb filters for people

  1. On your Pixel, head to the settings.
  2. Find and tap Modes.
  3. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  4. Select People.
  5. Choose whether to modify Messages or Calls.
  6. Select Starred contacts and tap the settings cog next to it.
  7. Add or modify your starred contacts to add them to the Do Not Disturb allowlist.

There are other options, too. You can allow all contacts to message or call you in DND mode, but that generally defeats the purpose. You can also edit priority conversations, though that takes a little more time to tune in.

With starred contacts allowlisted, anyone on that list can text/call your Pixel in with do not disturb on. The notification will go through as if the mode weren’t enabled. They won’t be silenced, though. To completely silence your phone in DND mode, you’ll need to set the Pixel to silent.

This function is great for those who want to focus or pay attention to a meeting or class without getting bombarded with notifications. If one of your contacts needs to get a hold of you, you won’t miss it.

Daytime shooting in Brockton leaves one person with life-threatening injuries

0

A shooting in Brockton Tuesday afternoon left one person with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Brockton police responded to multiple reports of gunfire near the intersection of Crescent and Montello Streets shortly before 4 p.m., Brockton police spokesperson Darren Duarte said in an email. At the scene, first-responders found two injured victims, though only one had been shot.

Both were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, Duarte said. One had life-threatening injuries, and the other had non-life-threatening injuries.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting, Duarte said. The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday evening.

No further information has been released.

Jaguar Land Rover to pause production until next week – at least

0

Luxury car-maker Jaguar Land Rover will not resume production at its factories for yet another week as it continues to grapple with fallout from a cyberattack.

In early September, the Jaguar Land Rover stopped production at its factories in the U.K. after it was impacted by a cyberattack in which hackers stole company data. Jaguar Land Rover has not said what data was stolen.

Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement on Tuesday the production suspension will continue until next week, specifically Wednesday October 1. But the company did not commit to resuming production then, only saying it “made this decision to give clarity for the coming week as we build the timeline for the phased restart of our operations and continue our investigation.”

Francis Robertson-Marriott, a spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors, declined to comment when TechCrunch asked if the company has a timeline for the restoration of production.

Factories have now been shut down for three weeks. The continued shutdown will affect suppliers as well, which are reportedly concerned about being forced into bankruptcy.

Palfarm might be the creepiest farming game ever

0

Palworld is getting as spinoff that looks both cozy and terrifying — oh, and filled with characters that look exactly like Pokémon. In Palworld: Palfarm, you move to the Palpagos Islands and create a farm alongside Pals. These creatures help with farm work, cook and can even become friends.

According to an announcement on Steam, “Through daily conversations, working together, or giving gifts from time to time, you can gradually deepen your relationships with both the Pals and the people of the island.” Pocketpair, the developer behind both games, adds that they might even play matchmaker — a brand new trailer shows Pals officiating at a human wedding. Notably, the game also supports multiplayer.

However, the game certainly seems to have an air of darkness. For starters, there’s this note in the description: “…Is one of your Pals slacking off? Time to teach them the joy of working.” Ominous, to say the least. Then there’s “nasty Pals,” who will try to raid your farm and must be beaten in combat.

Darkest of all is a black market that sells guns, among other suspicious items. What you would need a gun for in this game is something you can choose to find out, but it certainly seems like the Palpagos Islands are a mixed bag of a place.

Palworld: Palfarm doesn’t have a set release date yet, but you can watch the full trailer now.

Music megastar pulls out of Northeast festival due to ‘personal reasons’

0

The Weeknd will no longer perform at Global Citizen Festival, with the international pop star citing “personal reasons” for his cancellation.

The “Blinding Lights” singer, who was initially announced as part of this year’s lineup, revealed that he was pulling out of the New York event on his Instagram story Monday.

“I regret to share that, due to personal reasons, I am unable to perform at Global Citizen,” he wrote. “Thank you to my fans for taking action with them, as I believe in their mission deeply. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Global Citizen later revealed that Cardi B, who’s long-awaited sophomore album “Am I The Drama?” dropped this past Friday, will join this year’s lineup.

“Central Park, I’m coming for you!!! I can’t wait to be home in New York, and to bring my new songs and all the DRAMA to the Global Citizen Festival,” Cardi said in a statement via Rolling Stone. “This one’s not like other music festivals — this one is about coming together to help children around the world, and I’m so proud to support such an important cause. New York City — see you Saturday. Let’s get it!!!”

Global Citizen is the world’s largest an advocacy platform dedicated to ending extreme poverty, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The organization relies on “millions of Global Citizens” to help combat “the critical issues of climate change, poverty, and inequality,” the agency’s website states.

Held in New York’s Central Park, the 2025 Global Citizen Festival will be hosted by Hugh Jackman. The rest of this year’s lineup includes Shakira, Tyla, Ayra Starr, Mariah the Scientist, Camilo and Elyanna.

The festival is set to stream live worldwide on Saturday Sept. 27. Tickets can be purchased or earned through the Global Citizen app and website.
