After India, OpenAI launches its affordable ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia

0

OpenAI is expanding its budget-friendly ChatGPT subscription plan beyond India. The company launched its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go paid plan for the country’s users last month and now is rolling out the same plan in Indonesia for Rp75,000 ($4.50) per month.

The ChatGPT Go plan is a mid-tier subscription option that sits between OpenAI’s free version and its premium $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus plan. Users get 10 times higher usage limits than the free plan for sending questions or prompts, generating images, and uploading files. The plan also allows ChatGPT to remember previous conversations better, enabling more personalized responses over time, ChatGPT head Nick Turley said on X.

Turley said that since the company launched the ChatGPT Go plan in India, paid subscribers have more than doubled.

This move puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google, which launched its own similarly-priced AI Plus subscription plan in Indonesia earlier this month. Google’s AI Plus plan gives users access to its Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot, along with creative tools for image and video creation like Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast. The plan also includes enhanced features for Google’s AI research assistant NotebookLM and integrates AI capabilities into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, along with 200GB of cloud storage.

Facebook adds an AI assistant to its dating app

0

Facebook Dating has added two new AI tools, because clearly a large language model is what the search for love and companionship has been missing all this time. The social media platform introduced a chatbot called dating assistant that can help find prospective dates based on a user’s interests. In the announcing the features, the example Meta provided was “Find me a Brooklyn girl in tech.” The chatbot can also “provide dating ideas or help you level up your profile.” Dating assistant will start a gradual rollout to the Matches tab for users in the US and Canada. And surely everyone will use it in a mature, responsible, not-at-all-creepy fashion.

The other AI addition is Meet Cute, which uses a “personalized matching algorithm” to deliver a surprise candidate that it determines you might like. There’s no explanation in the blog post about how Meta’s algorithm will be assessing potential dates. If you don’t want to see who Meta’s AI thinks would be a compatible match each week, you can opt out of Meet Cute at any time. Both these features are aimed at combatting “swipe fatigue,” so if you’re 1) using Facebook, 2) using Facebook Dating, and 3) are really that tired of swiping, maybe this is the solution you need.

Google Clock for Wear OS update brings M3 Expressive app icons

0

As part of the upcoming M3 Expressive redesign, Google Clock for Wear OS has new app icons for Alarm, Stopwatch, and Timer.

Instead of a generic Alarm icon against a yellow background, you get a more realistic clock with some depth to the design. Thick Material 3 hands are leveraged at the center, while all icons in this family are now blue.

Meanwhile, the Stopwatch is no longer red, with the icon design straightforward. To me, this descriptive design does help recognize the app faster, though I never had any problem with the previous set. Some today might dislike the background color change.

The Timer looks like an actual hourglass with blue and purple hues, as well as 3D effects.

Old vs. new

These new icons are rolling out with version 6.10.571.x of Google Clock for Wear OS. This new update does not redesign the actual apps or Tiles. That could be another new release or a server-side update in the near future.

From our Pixel Watch 4 hands-on, the Material 3 Expressive updates to the Google Clock app aren’t major. There are modernizations like buttons being placed in pill-shaped containers and new shapes, as well as the updated font..

On phones, M3 Expressive doesn’t bring new app icons, with this unique to the Wear OS update. Fitbit icons got the same treatment, but other first-party apps are unchanged.

Woburn man charged in connection with stealing over $700K in federal tax refund checks

0

A Woburn man is facing charges in connection with stealing federal tax refund checks worth over $700,000, the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Nnamdi Opara, 30, has been charged with two counts of bank fraud and five counts of money laundering in federal court, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a press release. He was arrested in June as part of an ongoing investigation into the theft of U.S. Treasury tax refund checks in Massachusetts.

Opara wrongfully obtained two federal tax refund checks that were issued to a New York company named AFGO Mechanical Services, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. Afterwards, he established a company with the same name in Massachusetts, listing himself as its president, treasurer, secretary, vice president, director and registered agent.

Opara then deposited the checks — worth $700,767 in total — into an account in the name of his newly formed company even though it had never filed a federal tax return, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. He also made multiple illegal monetary transactions designed to conceal the theft.

Opara faces a sentence of up to 160 years in prison, up to 25 years of supervised release and a fine of up to $2.5 million if convicted on all the charges.

Facebook is getting an AI dating assistant

0

Meta announced on Monday that it’s bringing an AI assistant to Facebook Dating.

This chatbot is intended to help users find matches who are more closely tailored to what they are looking for. For example, Meta might suggest users ask it to find “a Brooklyn girl in tech” or a user could ask the AI to help refine their profile.

Meta also says that it’s “helping people avoid swipe fatigue” with a new feature called Meet Cute, which gives users a weekly “surprise match” chosen based on its algorithm.

The company says Facebook Dating matches among adults ages 18 to 29 have increased 10% year-over-year growth, with hundreds of thousands of users in that age group creating Facebook Dating profiles each month. That’s small compared to competitors like Tinder, which has about 50 million daily active users, and Hinge’s 10 million daily active users.

AI features have already become the norm in mainstream dating apps. Even newer dating apps like Sitch have attempted to differentiate themselves with their AI features.

Match Group — the owner of Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and others — entered a partnership with OpenAI last year, which is part of the dating giant’s $20 million-plus investment in AI. That’s a big bet, especially given the financial struggles of Match Group, which has lost about 68% of its stock price in the last five years.

So far, this investment has produced features like an AI photo selector tool to Tinder, which scans your cameral roll to help choose profile images, as well as AI-powered matching. Hinge has a feature that lets users improve their responses to profile prompts with AI.

Bumble has added similar AI features, and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd even ruffled some feathers last year when she suggested that one day, users could have personal “AI concierges” that go on dates with other people’s AI to determine compatibility.

Gemini arrives on Google TV

0

Gemini is officially available on Google TVs, now that the TCL QM9K series TVs are out in stores. At the moment, they’re the only television models that feature Google’s AI assistant, but Gemini will be available on more devices later this year. Google says it will make its way to the Google TV Streamer, Walmart’s onn 4K Pro streaming device, certain Hisense TV models and more TCL TVs. The company also intends to add more Gemini capabilities for televisions in the future.

Google introduced Gemini integration for TVs when it presented an early look at new software and hardware upgrades coming to the product category at CES in January. If you’ve ever used a Google-powered streaming device or television, you’d know that they already have Google Assistant that you can use for search. But Gemini on TV, like its counterpart everywhere else, enables free-flowing conversations using natural language. You can activate it with a “Hey, Google” or by pressing the mic button on the remote.

The company says you can ask Gemini to find you something to watch based on your preferences. For example, you can say: “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.” You can also ask it to summarize the events in the previous season of a show you’re watching if you need a refresher before you start the next one. You can also ask Gemini to show you reviews for a particular show, or even ask it vague questions, such as “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”

You’re not just limited to asking questions about TV shows and movies, either. When Google demonstrated the AI assistant at CES, a company rep asked Gemini on TV to “explain the solar system to a third grader.” The AI assistant did, and it also suggested relevant YouTube videos. You can ask it questions if you’re learning a new skill, as well as recipes, to get answers with video suggestions you can follow. And after it’s done answering your first query, you can make follow-up questions for clarity and more information.

OnePlus shows off the OnePlus 15’s major redesign

0

The OnePlus 15 is right around the corner and the teasers have started, as the device has just shown up at an e-sports event to show off its major redesign.

At the 2025 Peace Elite League (PEL) Summer Finals in China this weekend, a collection of e-sports champs gathered for a photo around a new OnePlus device. While it’s not mentioned by name, the “guess what they’re looking at” question in the Weibo post serves as a not-so-subtle teaser for the OnePlus 15. It’s certainly intentional product placement rather than a leak.

As seen in the image, the OnePlus 15 looks to be getting a major redesign this year, forgoing the rounded camera module that’s been a staple of the brand’s design for the past several generations.

The new camera module is a rounded square with cutouts for the cameras and flash. It looks similar to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and 10 Pro Fold from Google. OnePlus first started using this design on the compact OnePlus 13T, but the camera module on its upcoming flagship is quite a bit larger proportionally.

In another post on Weibo, leaker Digital Chat Station adds that the OnePlus 15 will be using some sort of “ceramic coating” on the frame, and that the entire phone will feature a matte texture. This coating is said to be “four times stronger than titanium,” while the phone itself is thinner than Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max (8.8mm).

The OnePlus 15 is likely to be announced for the Chinese market within the next few weeks, with a global launch likely by the end of this year.

Fall foliage forecast 2025: New England’s autumn colors arriving early

0

New England’s fall foliage season is forecast to begin earlier than usual in 2025, with northern regions seeing initial color changes in late September. However, visitors should expect a more localized “patchwork” display rather than the region’s typically uniform autumn spectacle.

The 2025 season will be shaped by unusual weather patterns, including a wet spring followed by severe summer drought conditions, ongoing beech leaf disease challenges, and climate change effects on regional forests, according to multiple forecasts from state tourism departments, meteorological services, and expert forecasters.

Yankee Magazine describes this year’s colors as “spotlight moments” of brilliant color that will be more localized than in typical years. The publication advises that “leaf peepers should plan their adventures to include different elevations and aspects to ensure they catch the show” due to the patchwork nature of this year’s foliage display.

CBS News Boston experts are “targeting late September to the start of October as the best time for this area to shine” in the Green Mountains and northern Vermont region. Vermont’s high concentration of sugar maples, which cover 70 percent of the state, contributes to its reputation for spectacular fall colors.

The White Mountains region of New Hampshire remains a premier destination, with local experts noting that “the best foliage is in the White Mountains, along the Kancamagus Highway – Rt 112.” Northern Maine, particularly Aroostook County, is expected to see peak colors from September 27 to October 9.

Some areas may fare better than others this season. An expert from WAMC Northeast Public Radio explained that drought impacts vary by location: “Up here in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid area the drought hasn’t been real bad. So we’re looking at a likelihood of a really nice display.”

For scenic driving, the 35-mile Kancamagus Highway “runs through the middle of the White Mountains (no towns, no houses, no gas stations), over a couple mountain passes.” Vermont Route 100, described as “one of the most popular routes for experiencing fall foliage in New England,” “runs through the entire length of Vermont and offers stunning views of the Green Mountains, rolling hills, and quaint villages.”

Rhode Island offers coastal foliage viewing along Route 1 and 1A “from Westerly to Wickford” and Ocean Drive in Newport, which provides “fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Fort Adams State Park.” State tourism officials suggest visitors “travel Ocean Drive beginning at the Fort Adams end to avoid glare from a setting sun” for afternoon visits.

State parks recommended for combining foliage viewing with cultural experiences include Roger Williams Park and Zoo in Providence, Blithewold Mansion & Gardens in Bristol, and Goddard Memorial State Park in Rhode Island, plus Baxter State Park in Maine.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that “peak foliage usually lasts 7 to 10 days in a given location, but the exact window can shift due to temperature, rainfall, and wind,” making flexible travel plans important for catching peak colors.

Photography conditions vary throughout the day, with “morning light creating softer colors with less glare, while late afternoon light adds warmth and depth to red and orange hues,” according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Yankee Magazine noted that “Canadian wildfire smoke might impact long-distance fall foliage photography, making smaller landscape scenes more photogenic.”

Sugar maples are reportedly faring better than other tree species in current climate conditions, making maple-rich areas likely to offer the most vibrant displays. However, beech leaf disease continues to impact some areas. CBS News Boston advises that “if you see a banding of dark and light green on your beech leaves, the tree is infected.”

For those seeking less crowded viewing spots, lesser-known locations include Dixville Notch State Park, Hart’s Location and Tamworth, Waitsfield or Warren in Vermont, Jackson in New Hampshire, and The Basin Pond located just inside the New Hampshire border off Route 113.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems books a $1B+ power deal for its future fusion reactor

0

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has agreed to sell Italian energy company Eni more than $1 billion worth of power from its first fusion reactor.

The power plant will be built outside of Richmond, Virginia, close to some of the highest densities of data centers in the country. The 400-megawatt fusion reactor, called Arc, is expected to open in the early 2030s, CEO Bob Mumgaard said.

The Eni agreement is the second such deal for Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). In June, Google said that it would buy half the reactor’s output. When asked, neither CFS nor Eni would say how much power the deal covers nor its timeline.

Mumgaard told reporters last week that CFS’s first power plant, the demonstration-scale Sparc reactor in Devens, Massachusetts, is 65% complete. The company has previously said it plans to turn on Sparc later in 2026, and Mumgaard confirmed that CFS is “on track to do that.”

“One of the reasons we built Sparc is so that we could actually get the experience of what it’s like to build a nearly full-scale system,” he said. “Arc will be the first of many that’s backed by a supply chain that is primed for scale.”

CFS is widely regarded as a leader in the fusion industry. It’s reactor design is based on the tokamak, a widely studied system in which D-shaped superconducting magnets confine and compress superheated plasma. In that plasma, particles collide, forming new atoms and releasing energy in the process. The company frequently updates scientists on its progress, and it has run extensive simulations to uncover any potential hurdles.

CFS expects that Sparc will prove be able to generate more power than is required to sustain the fusion reactions. But at the same time, the company won’t know for sure if it all works until Sparc is complete. That’s likely to exhaust a significant fraction of the nearly $3 billion it has raised to date, including an $863 million Series B2 round announced three weeks ago. That round included checks from a wide range of investors, including Nvidia, Google, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and Eni.

Which raises the question, what happens to CFS’s deals with Google and Eni if there’s a delay, or worse, if the reactors don’t work as planned?

The agreements are structured to “walk the line” between punitive and collaborative, Mumgaard said. The partners “understand these challenges that come from first of a kind,” he said. “No one in this situation is like, oh, you know, invent an entire new technology, an entire industry, and if it doesn’t work on this day, we’re just going to walk away.”

Google has hinted that it will use Arc’s electricity to power its data centers, but Eni, which is one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, doesn’t have operations in the U.S. that would demand that amount of energy.

“The power will be sent to the grid at the end of the day,” said Lorenzo Fiorillo, Eni’s director of technology, R&D, and digital.

In short, Eni will resell it.

But any electricity generated by Arc, a first-of-its-kind reactor, is going to be expensive. Eni is more likely to lose money trading that power on the grid than it is to profit.

Instead, this agreement is likely intended to help establish a price for fusion power and rustle up more money to build Arc.

Mumgaard admitted as much. The power purchase agreement, he said, “gives us the certainty of where the power is going to go, what the price is going to be, etc. And that allows us to then take that package to more financial investors in project finance and other areas and start having conversations about what it’s going to be like to actually finance this plant.”

NASA resurrects its VIPER moon rover for a 2027 mission with Blue Origin

0

NASA is apparently giving its ice-scouting moon rover mission another try. The space agency has announced that the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) project — which was called off last year after a series of delays and mounting costs — could catch a ride to the moon with Blue Origin in 2027 under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. Blue Origin must first plan and demonstrate how the delivery at the lunar surface would work, and if it’s all to NASA’s liking, VIPER will be ferried by the company’s Blue Moon Mark 1 lander.

Blue Origin hasn’t yet attempted a moon landing, but the first opportunity for its Blue Moon Mark 1 lander is expected to launch later this year as part of another CLPS delivery. That mission will also help to inform NASA’s decision about VIPER’s rideshare, which would use a second Mark 1 lander that the agency says is already in production. If VIPER does eventually make it to the moon, it’ll be deployed in the extreme environment of the lunar South Pole to search for water ice and other resources that could support future missions.

“This delivery could show us where ice is most likely to be found and easiest to access, as a future resource for humans,” said Joel Kearns, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration with NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, in a statement. “And by studying these sources of lunar water, we also gain valuable insight into the distribution and origin of volatiles across the solar system, helping us better understand the processes that have shaped our space environment and how our inner solar system has evolved.”
