Pop singer Connie Francis has died at 87. The first female singer to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, she was known for her hit single “Who’s Sorry Now?” and for singing the theme song and appearing in the 1961 film, Where the Boys Are.

Her publicist, Ron Roberts, announced her death in a Facebook post.

Born Concetta Franconero in Newark, New Jersey, she changed her name at age 13 when television host Arthur Godfrey suggested that “Connie Francis” would be easier to pronounce. Her big breakthrough came in 1957, when she covered an old 1923 tune called “Who’s Sorry Now?”

Francis hated the song, but it was a big hit — eventually reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It stayed on the charts for months. “Who’s Sorry Now?” would become one of her signature songs, and the eventual title of her autobiography.

Connie Francis sold over 40 million records before she was 25. Sixteen of them went gold. Her number one hit, “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool,” came out in 1960. Her acting career was brief — she appeared in a short string of undistinguished romantic comedies, and within a few years, her life became touched more by tragedy than success.

In 1967, one of her closest friends was strangled to death in her home. That same year, Francis underwent a cosmetic procedure meant to narrow her nose. But it damaged her ability to sing.

“I couldn’t sing in air conditioned rooms,” she told NPR in 1982. “Which presented great problems in Las Vegas. They had to shut the air conditioning off, and the people would wilt. And I would, and the band would.”

In 1974, Francis was raped at knifepoint and beaten at a Howard Johnson motel after singing at a music festival in Westbury, New York. She successfully sued the company for failing to provide adequate security. At $2.5 million, it was then one of the largest awards ever in a rape case. Enduring the 1976 trial was not easy. But she was quoted in the courtroom by the New York Times saying, “If what we did here could save one girl, it was worth it.”

The botched nasal surgery made it difficult for Francis to work.

“There was a doctor in New York who said that he could correct this,” she told NPR. “So I went for surgery, and two weeks before I went in for that surgery, I was recording an Italian album, and two weeks after the surgery, I went back to finish the overdub of the album, and that was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, because my voice was gone. So, it wasn’t the rape that affected my voice. It was definitely the surgery. And I had a range of about seven notes. There was not one song I could sing from beginning to end. Oh, incidentally, two months after I’d lost my voice, my husband got up and left, and he just left. And that was the end of that.”

It took three more surgeries before Francis could sing again. She was hospitalized for bipolar disorder on multiple occasions. Her brother, a lawyer who had recently testified as part of an investigation into Mafia dealings, was shot to death by a pair of gunmen in his driveway in 1981.

Shortly after his murder, she told NPR, she turned on the radio and heard an old standard.

“And I very quietly, I started to sing it,” she said. “And then when I was finished, I realized that I had sung the whole song. I didn’t have that kind of range before then. I went out into the street to go to an appointment, and I started singing songs. Every song I could think of, I stopped in the middle of the street and I yelled, I can sing. I mean, like, you know, it was like a scene from a movie. I went to the first phone booth and I called my manager, who was my manager since the age of 12. And I said, George, book me at Westbury right back at Westbury just as soon as you can. And he was in a state of shock. You know, he after seven years, he he said, Connie, are you all right? And I said, I’m fine. Book me at Westbury as soon as you can. “

Francis went back to performing. She formed her own record company and worked for years. Even after retiring to Boca Raton, she still made occasional appearances into her 80s. Recently, Francis gained social media fame earlier this year because of the resurgence of her song “Pretty Little Baby,” which went viral on TikTok.

Spotify’s Audiobooks+ add-on is now available to some Premium subscribers

0

It’s likely that you predominantly associate with music and podcasts, but if you’re a Premium member, you also get 15 hours of audiobook access per month. For some members, though, that clearly isn’t enough, as Spotify has introduced a new add-on subscription that doubles that listening time.

was first trialled in Ireland and Canada, and is launching initially for Premium Individual and Plan members in a number of countries in Europe, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Once you’ve added it to your existing subscription, you’ll get an additional 15 hours of listening to audiobooks included in Spotify’s , on top of what’s already included in the base plan. For individuals, Spotify Premium on its own costs $12 per month.

For those on Premium Family ($20 per month) or Duo ($17 per month) plans, the plan manager has to purchase the add-on, and they’re also able to buy a one-time top-up of 10 hours if they run out before their entitlement resets each month.

Spotify does already offer an plan to customers in the US only, which is separate from the Premium offering and also includes access to music and podcasts with ads.

Pricing for Audiobooks+ varies by market, but will cost £9 per month in the UK (around $12), where an individual Premium plan costs £12 (about $16). We’ll find out what it costs here when it arrives in the US, which Spotify told Engadget will happen in the “coming weeks”.

Sonos Ace ANC over-ear headphones still sitting down at $299 Prime Day Amazon low (Reg. $449)

We saw a ton of notable deals on over-ear headphones during this year’s Prime Day festivities, just about all of which are now back at full price…except for one. Amazon is still offering one of our favorite sets of over-ear ANC cans down at the best price ever – the Sonos Ace in black or white for $299 shipped. You’re looking at $150 in savings here.

While for many it’s hard to side-step the latest Bose Ultra cans or AirPods Max, never mind the wonderful new Sony XM6 headphones – here’s our hands-on review for those, but all of those are going to cost you well over $400 right now (AirPods Max are currently $529 and the new Sony XM6 are at $448).

While the Sonos Ace caught a bit of a bad break when the Sonos app starting have some issues long-time fans of the brand were not stoked about, almost none of that has all that much of a negative effect on the user experience in our opinion, and they remain in our top 5 you can buy in a price range that is now a whole lot lower (some 9to5 staffers rank the Ace as the their absolute favorite, in fact).

Active Noise Cancellation, 30 hours of battery life with ANC on, an additional 3 hours with a quick 3-minute charge, and a relatively high-end build by comparison to some of the 100% plastic competitors out there highlight the feature list here. But you can get a much closer look at the user experience in our video review:

GoFundMe campaigns set up for family of Fall River man killed in police shooting

0

The family of a Fall River man shot and killed by police has set up two GoFundMe campaigns to raise money to support them, with one of the campaigns calling for justice.

“Today is a sad day for my family,” read the description of one of the GoFundMe fundraisers, written by Elijah Knight on July 15. “Today we lost a dad, a friend, a father, a brother and a husband. Domonick Knight was a father of four and a husband. Before he left this earth, we were not prepared for this nor expecting this.”

“We are asking for help to pay for his funeral, to get a lawyer, and to help his family with future expenses,” Elijah Knight continued. “We can’t replace a father, a husband, a brother or a son, but we can help his family. Please find the kindness in your heart to help his family.”

In asking for help, the fundraiser stated that the funeral date has not been determined, though it also states that Domonick Knight’s services will be held on July 21.

So far, the fundraiser has received 170 donations totaling $15,000, with a goal of receiving $18,000.

In the description of a separate fundraiser set up by Nieema Knight, she wrote that “Fall River police shot my dad in the head and killed him,” and added that officers did not help him.

“Me, my mother and my 3 younger siblings were held at gunpoint and were out in the rain from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. waiting for answers, scared and disregarded,” she continued.

Nieema Knight added that she “can’t imagine how scared and alone my father felt in his last moments.”

“Domonick Cornwallace Knight deserved to be given a chance, a helping hand, and a caring environment,” she wrote.

The second fundraiser has so far received 124 donations totaling $5,529, with a goal of receiving $15,000.

What police say happened

On July 15, Fall River police arrived at a duplex at 117 Langley St. before 1:40 a.m. They had received several 911 calls from Domonick Knight’s relatives, which said he was experiencing a mental health crisis, authorities said. His relatives said he was expressing intent to harm himself and had a gun.

Officers secured the scene, evacuated the home’s other residents and brought a trained crisis negotiator to talk to Domonick Knight on the phone via text messaging or by loudspeaker, but he did not respond.

After nearly an hour of unsuccessful attempts to communicate with Domonick Knight, officers decided to enter the home to try to speak with him, police said. Fall River police’s Emergency Services Unit went into the home via the front door around 3:15 a.m. and quickly noticed movement at the top of the stairs.

Domonick Knight began shooting at officers in the doorway from the second-floor landing, police said. Police fired back at him while they moved out of the way, with body camera footage showing officers yelling at Domonick Knight to come downstairs.

Officers can be seen finding Knight lying on the floor of the landing with a handgun in his hand and a short-barreled rifle underneath him. They can be heard quickly calling for medical services as they put him in handcuffs.

Knight was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III’s office said in a statement. An autopsy is being performed on his body and forensic testing is being done to determine how he died.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident. No further information has been released.

TikTok is adding features for songwriters to its app

0

TikTok is adding new features to its app to let songwriters highlight their works. These features, rolling out in beta, include a “Songwriter” label and a new tab on their profile to show off their musical works. This can help songwriters market themselves better to potential clients.

The company said a limited number of publishing partners and songwriters have access to the new label and the music highlight section. Songwriters and publishers who want to be part of the program will have to join a waitlist for now.

TikTok said that it surveyed over 870 songwriters and interviewed a bunch of them to understand their needs on social media in relation to profile building and the creation of monetization opportunities. The company also pointed to an independent survey, which indicated that more than half of songwriters use social media to raise their profile use TikTok to do it. The Bytedance-owned apps said that the outcome of these surveys drove the decision to build these features.

“We are passionately committed to supporting songwriters at TikTok, which is why we built these tools to celebrate and elevate songwriters and their work on our platform,” TikTok’s Global Head of Music Publishing Licensing and Partnership said in a sentence.

“TikTok is unique in its ability to offer songwriters a way to highlight their musical works alongside their own content, helping them to tell stories about their music, their craft, and their lives, and to raise their profile and build their audience on TikTok, as hundreds of thousands of artist creators already do.”

Notably, Spotify has been releasing features to let songwriters highlight their work for years now. Last year, Tidal went beyond just highlighting songwriter works and launched a tool to track their royalties and manage their work for which they have songwriting credits.

While TikTok decided to shut down its music streaming service TikTok Music last year, the platform still remains important for users to discover new music and for artists to promote their tracks. Earlier this year, the company released a TikTok for Artists tool to let artists monitor the performance of their campaign and tracks.

The FCC plans to ban Chinese technology in undersea cables

0

The Federal Communication Commission plans to vote on new rules that will ban the use of Chinese technology in undersea cables, according to a press release from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. The proposed rules will apply to any company on the FCC’s existing list of entities that pose “an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States.”

Besides “prohibiting the use of ‘covered’ equipment,” the FCC’s new rules will also limit the ability for Chinese companies to receive a license to build or operate cables that connect to the US. Undersea or submarine cables are a key piece of internet infrastructure, and a potential site of foreign espionage in the eyes of the FCC. Banning, or at least severely limiting the influence of Chinese companies is an attempt to benefit American cable providers while hurting the country’s perceived enemies.

During President Donald Trump’s first term, the FCC made similar moves to prevent mobile carriers from using Chinese equipment in the US. Trump signed a law that required carriers to “rip and replace” old Huawei and ZTE mobile infrastructure, and the FCC provisioned funding to make it happen. The new rules around undersea cables are being proposed by a very different commission, though.

Currently, there are only three commissioners on the FCC, down from the typical five. Under Carr, the commission has taken a much more aggressive approach to regulating the telecommunications industry, bordering on violating the First Amendment. Carr has threatened to investigate companies for their diversity, equity and inclusion policies and committed to not approving any mergers of companies that insist on keeping them.

The FCC is expected to vote on the new rules on August 7. Besides being consistent with past FCC actions, they could be justified as a way of securing American infrastructure following the widespread “Salt Typhoon” hack the affected US carriers and other companies last year.

Google Messages testing RCS’ new MLS encryption, Details page

0

Back in March, cross-platform end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS was announced, and Google Messages is beginning to test the new Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol.

Universal Profile 3.0 adds support for MLS, which makes E2E encryption possible across different RCS clients and providers. Google first announced its support for this interoperable protocol in 2023. The GSMA and Apple announced official adoption this March.

Google Messages is now beginning to test MLS encryption for RCS. It starts with a new message “Details” (long-press on the chat/text) screen that’s fullscreen compared to the current approach.

You get a preview of the message at the top, with Google also showing a “Status” section for “Sent” and Delivered” that explains the new checkmarks. We see Google using the latest single circle design that has yet to become widely available

Advertisement – scroll for more content

There’s also a “From” section, while the bottom portion provides more technical details like:

  • Type: End-to-End Encrypted Rich Communication Service message
  • Priority: Normal
  • Message id: xxxxx
  • Encryption Protocol: EncryptionProtocol(value=1)

A previous teardown from earlier this year suggested that the “1” value is new MLS protocol, while “0” is Google’s existing approach for Android devices.

This new design is not widely rolled out in the beta channel. It’s unclear if that’s also the case for MLS as the old UI makes no indication, while Apple has yet to specify when support is coming.

Beeper’s all-in-one messaging app relaunches with an on-device model and premium upgrades

0

Multi-service messaging app Beeper, which allows people to connect to all their chat apps from one interface, is relaunching its app on Wednesday to offer a more secure version that no longer requires use of its own cloud services. In addition, Beeper is introducing premium offerings that provide access to more accounts than its free tier and include power-user features like reminders, the ability to send messages later, an incognito mode to read messages without marking them read, AI voice note transcriptions, and more.

Now owned by WordPress.com maker Automattic, which bought Beeper for $125 million in 2024, the app has almost entirely integrated with competitor Texts.com, which Automattic also acquired the year prior for $50 million.

With a combined 30-person team (including contractors) and now operating under the Beeper brand, the messaging app supports WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, X, Telegram, Signal, Matrix, Slack, Google Chat, Discord, LinkedIn, and Google Messages (SMS/RCS). On Mac computers only, Beeper can also connect users with their iMessage chats, though Apple has shut down this access in prior versions.

The overall goal, according to Automattic, is to simplify the problem of having too many messaging apps to keep up with, while also keeping those chats secure.

The app previously first connected with Beeper Cloud before communicating with the messaging network, said Beeper CEO Kishan Bagaria. While that system remains the default, users will now have the option of switching to Beeper on device, which will see the app connecting directly to the messaging network and skipping the middleman.

“That ensures that end-to-end encryption is preserved and your privacy is as good as the official app,” Bagaria told TechCrunch in an interview ahead of the app’s relaunch. Whether the companies involved will appreciate having their own apps bypassed, however, remains to be seen.

“We have good relationships with some of these companies, and some of them are OK with this,” Bagaria said. “Others, we have not really heard from much.”

To stave off any potential shutdowns by messaging network providers, Beeper aims to support the business models of the first-party apps whenever possible. For example, if Telegram is showing ads, those ads will be shown in Beeper, too.

In addition, EU regulations requiring that messaging platforms be interoperable could put pressure on messaging app providers to leave a solution like Beeper’s alone.

Alongside the relaunch, there will now be an option to upgrade to a new $9.99 per month premium plan, Beeper Plus, which allows users to connect with 10 messaging services instead of just the five that free users have access to.

In addition, Plus subscribers have the option to schedule messages to send later, can set reminders to follow up on chats, read messages in incognito mode so they don’t feel pressured to respond immediately, access multiple accounts per network, view AI voice note transcriptions (processed via OpenAI’s Whisper model with user consent), and swap out their app icon for a custom version.

An even higher tier, Beeper Plus Plus, which starts at $49.99 per month, offers access to unlimited accounts and is designed with the needs of businesses or social media managers in mind. (Annual subscriptions are also available at a discounted price of $99.99 per year for Beeper Plus and $499 per year for Beeper Plus Plus.)

After Automattic acquired Beeper, the company combined its team with Texts.com to develop a new product that offered the best of both services. With Wednesday’s relaunch, those apps are now 99% integrated, Bagaria said, as only a few smaller features remain to be ported over.

Eventually, Automattic’s latest acquisition, the personal CRM Clay, which may be later rebranded), will also be integrated with Beeper, though it will remain a stand-alone app.

“It will mostly be built on top of the Beeper platform — it’ll stay complimentary,” Bagaria said. “Clay is an amazing app [as it] works today. Then, with Beaver, it can just ingest more interactions and data, which will make it like 2x to 10x better. Once that is done, I’m sure Clay can be a very powerful product.”

Beeper today has millions of registered users, including those from Texts.com. A small portion of those who are still using Texts.com are now being offered the option to migrate to Beeper, since it has added the on-device technology, which they prefer.

Bagaria said there may still be some remaining issues around reliability when moving to the on-device model, but those are being worked out as edge cases pop up. At some later point, Beeper Cloud will be deprecated once the company is sure the on-device model is capable of being everyone’s daily driver.

Further down the road, Beeper aims to make its data available to other companies, with user permission and controls to protect privacy. For instance, an MCP (model context protocol) Beeper one day could let users connect to chat apps via Claude or ChatGPT to ask it things like “summarize all my important messages from this evening.”

Those developments will take some time, as Bagaria says he’s also a “very privacy-conscious user,” and would want a solution that’s very transparent about what data is accessed and when, and one that allows users to even manually say yes or no to data requests, perhaps.

“We also don’t want to have server farms where we have models trained on your data. That’s a complete no-no,” he said.

Google expands AI Mode with extra features for search

0

Google is continuing to double down on its AI Mode, bringing more features to its dedicated Search chatbot. Today, the company is the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and the Deep Search capability to AI Mode. These features will be available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers. Although both of these tools can still be accessed through other means, Google’s move to incorporate them into the chatbot points to an end goal of AI Mode being the primary form of engagement with the company’s signature search service.

These developments are follow-ups to announcements made during Google’s I/O conference this spring. AI Mode began to all Google users in May, and Deep Think was also as an option for the Gemini 2.5 Pro model at that time.

Another AI tool teased at I/O was the ability for Gemini to place phone calls with . This agentic option is also coming in a limited form to AI Mode. For starters, it will only be able to contact local businesses and its topics will be limited to inquiring about availability and pricing. When a person searches for companies or services, they may see an option such as “Have AI check prices” that will initiate a call to that business. These AI phone calls are rolling out today to all Search users, but Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will have higher limits.
