Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 gets a big discount in clear-out sale

0

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 is one of the company’s last smartwatches with a fully circular design, but with a new model available, the clearout sales have begun.

The Galaxy Watch 7 is already cheaper than its successor at $299, but Samsung is offering a $90 discount across all models right now as it attempts to clear out some of its remaining inventory of the slightly older Wear OS smartwatch.

This brings the starting price down to $209, which is not a bad deal considering you’re buying direct from Samsung with no trade-in needed, and with the option to throw in a pair Galaxy Buds for up to 35% off.

Here’s how the pricing breaks down with the ongoing discounts:

You’ll have the choice of either the green or “cream” color options.

This discount at Samsung.com is solid, but it’s not the best price you can find. Some sellers on Amazon have the 44mm Galaxy Watch 7 for as low as under $200, which is quite a bit cheaper than Samsung’s own store. But if you want to get it direct from Samsung, this is a pretty great price (though not the lowest we’ve ever seen, per 9to5Toys).

0

A Connecticut man walked away from the casino a jackpot winner last Sunday.

The man, identified by the casino as Jimmie Bennett from Bridgeport, was playing in Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Sky on July 6 when he hit the Super Grand Jackpot on the game “Dollar Storm.” It was worth $211,079.52.

A few days later, one of the largest jackpots ever won at Mohegan Sun was hit.

While playing on a “Spanish 21″ table in Casino of the Earth on Wednesday, the player made an optional $5 Bonus Spin Xtreme side bet. The bet ended in Triple Diamonds, which landed them the $2,018,742.30 jackpot.

“Not only is this the biggest jackpot win at Mohegan Sun in 2025, but it also ranks among the top five largest table game payouts ever at Mohegan Sun,” a press release from the casino stated.

Overall, there are about 4,000 slot machines and more than 300 table games at Mohegan Sun.

Players must be 21 years or older.

A United Nations research institute created an AI refugee avatar

0

A research institute connected to the United Nations has created two AI-powered avatars designed to teach people about refugee issues.

404 Media wrote about an experiment conducted by a class at the United Nations University Center for Policy Research that resulted in the creation of two AI agents or avatars — Amina, a fictional woman who fled Sudan and is living in a refugee camp in Chad, and Abdalla, a fictional soldier with the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary force in Sudan.

Users are supposed to be able to talk to Amina and Abdalla on the experiment’s website, though I received an error message when I tried to register on Saturday afternoon.

Eduardo Albrecht, a Columbia professor and a senior fellow at the UNU-CPR, told 404 Media that he and his students were “just playing around with the concept” and not proposing this as a solution for the UN.

A paper summarizing this work suggested that these avatars could eventually be used “to quickly make a case to donors.” However, it also noted that many workshop attendees who interacted with the agents responded negatively, for example saying that refugees “are very capable of speaking for themselves in real life.”

The Cult of the Lamb comic is coming back with the Schism Special this fall

0

We’re officially getting more of the Cult of the Lamb comic expansion. Following last year’s miniseries, which built on the game’s existing lore and injected some real emotional depth, writer Alex Paknadel and artist Troy Little are returning to the story of the Lamb and their followers in a one-shot 48-page issue that’s due out in the fall from Oni Press. Cult of the Lamb: Schism Special #1 will be available on October 29 for $8, with covers by Troy Little and Peach Momoko, alongside a foil variant for $10.

Schism Special picks up after the emotional events at the end of the first story arc. Per Oni Press:

In the aftermath of their first and closest follower’s sacrifice, Lamb continues the bloody quest to defeat the Bishops of the Old Faith, but they lack the conviction to tend their growing flock back at the cult. More potential followers are rescued by the day, but with no one to indoctrinate them, Lamb’s power stagnates and The One Who Waits becomes weary of his earthly vessel’s resistance to the full power and responsibility of the Red Crown. When famine strikes the cult, a challenger to Lamb’s mantle emerges, and a new struggle begins…

I genuinely can’t wait to dive back into this story (even though it broke my heart a little) after being pleasantly surprised by how good the comics turned out to be. They’ve done a great job so far of honoring the game’s tone, serving up both cuteness and brutality, and at this point, I’ll pretty much take all the Cult of the Lamb content I can get.

Google Contacts adds ‘Recent activity’ with messages, calls

0

One of the most useful aspects of Pixel VIPs is how it shows recent calls and messages, and the Google Contacts app is now gaining that functionality with “Recent activity.”

Recent activity is a new card in-between Contact info and Connected apps. It shows the most recent call and message from the contact you’re viewing. The former notes when it occurred and duration, or if you missed the call.

You can also see the last sent text/chat in Google Messages, with Contacts also noting what number was used. A tap opens the conversation directly.

Recent activity might already be populated with call information, but you have to enable the SMS permission to “view messages from your contacts.” A prompt guides you through that process.

This can also be accessed through the Google Phone app (though access to Contacts is being deprioritized), and builds on how the homescreen widget can show notifications.

This functionality matches Pixel VIPs. Personally, I’ve been using the widget to immediately get into conversations. It speaks to how a dedicated Google Messages widget might be useful.

We’re seeing this live with version 4.58 of Google Contacts. It has been rolling out in the past week or so, but is now seeing wider availability.

Thanks Tushar

‘Incredible’ throw in Boston Red Sox shutout win ‘shocked’ Garrett Crochet

0

Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet recorded his first career complete game Saturday. He allowed just three hits while striking out nine in a 1-0 win over the Rays here at Fenway Park.

But the shutout wouldn’t have happened if not for first baseman Abraham Toro throwing out a runner at the plate in the sixth inning.

“That was incredible,” Crochet said.

The Rays bunted with runners at the corners and one out. Ha-Seong Kim laid down the bunt to the right side of the infield. Toro charged in to field it with his barehand and threw out Taylor Walls at home.

Crochet said he was “shocked” that Toro threw home instead of taking the sure out at first base.

“And was more shocked at the out call,” he said. “But it was a great play overall.”

When asked about his decision to throw home instead of first base, Toro said, “Running to the ball, I just saw the runner a little bit in my peripheral view. I saw that and I had time.”

Manager Alex Cora said infield coordinator José Flores told Toro to move in.

“(Flores) actually got his attention right before the pitch,” Cora said. “Move up a little bit. And you have to be precise and perfect. And the tag was amazing.”

Toro said Cora also was involved in anticipating the bunt.

“Right before the play he (Cora) was telling me to be aware of the bunt,” Toro said. “That gave me a little heads-up and I was able to anticipate.”

The play was close enough that the Rays challenged the call, but it was upheld after review.

“When they decided to challenge it, (catcher) Carlos (Narváez) was coming out to the mound, and he was pretty confident,” Crochet said. “I saw the video and I wasn’t super confident until they showed the next angle. But yeah, that was a very awkward, uncomfortable throw — and he put it right on the money. So it was huge.”

Toro was slightly nervous waiting for the play to be reviewed.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ I thought it was a clear out and then when they challenged it, I was like, ‘Please,’” Toro said. “Then I was happy that it was out.”

Marc Andreessen reportedly told group chat that universities will ‘pay the price’ for DEI

0

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen sharply criticized universities including Stanford and MIT, along with the National Science Foundation, in a group chat with AI scientists and Trump administration officials, according to screenshots viewed by the Washington Post.

According to the Post, Andreessen described MIT and Stanford (which I attended two decades ago) as “mainly political operations fighting American innovation.” He also reportedly complained that Stanford “forced my wife out [as chair of its Center on Philanthropy and Civil society] without a second thought, a decision that will cost them something like $5 billion in future donations.”

In a separate message that did not mention a specific school, Andreessen reportedly said that universities “declared war on 70% of the country and now they’re going to pay the price.” He took aim at “DEI and immigration,” which he reportedly described as “two forms of discrimination” that are “politically lethal.”

Last year, Andreessen and his Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Ben Horowitz both said that they were supporting Donald Trump’s campaign to return to the White House. Andreessen’s allies have subsequently taken roles in the Trump administration.

TechCrunch has reached out to a16z for comment. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital has remained silent following partner Shaun Maguire’s criticism of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, as an “Islamist” who “comes from a culture that lies about everything.”

David Gergen, a veteran of Washington politics and an adviser to four presidents in a career spanning decades in government, academia and media, has died. He was 83.

Gergen worked in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Over the years, he served as a speechwriter, communications director and counselor to the president, among other roles.

Dean Jeremy Weinstein of the Harvard Kennedy School, with which Gergen had a long relationship, said Gergen died of a long illness. Gergen “devoted decades of his life to serving those who sought to serve,” said Hannah Riley Bowles, a former co-director of the school’s Center for Public Leadership, where Gergen was the founding director.

“David was a principled leader of unmatched character, integrity and kindness, who chose to see goodness in every person he met,” Riley Bowles said.

Al Gore, who served as Clinton’s vice president, posted on X, “Of the countless ways that David Gergen contributed to our great country, what I will remember him for most was his kindness to everyone he worked with, his sound judgment, and his devotion to doing good in the world.”

David Richmond Gergen was born in North Carolina and graduated from Yale University and the Harvard Law School, according to a biography on the Harvard Kennedy School website. He would go on to receive 27 honorary degrees over the course of his career.

Gergen founded the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and remained there as professor of public service emeritus until his death, according to the school’s website.

After serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1960s, Gergen took his first White House job in 1971, serving as a speechwriting assistant for Nixon. Bipartisanship and collaboration were hallmarks of his long career, said colleagues who paid testimonials on social media Friday.

He was also a media personality who worked as a senior political analyst for CNN. In his 2022 book Hearts Touched with Fire: How Great Leaders are Made, he wrote: “Our greatest leaders have emerged from both good times and, more often, challenging ones. … The very finest among them make the difficult calls, that can ultimately alter the course of history.”

A private burial is scheduled for Mount Auburn Cemetery on Monday, said Mark Douglass, director of Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, Massachusetts. A larger memorial service at Harvard will be held in the coming weeks, Douglass said.

This HDMI mod lets you play Nintendo Switch Lite on a big screen

0

If you can’t get your hands on the latest Nintendo Switch 2, you might be able to keep the FOMO at bay in the meantime with a clever mod for your Switch Lite. Retro Remake’s co-founder, Taki Udon, posted a video showing off a working version of the SUPER5 OLED Touch HDMI mod. As the lengthy name suggests, this third-party mod adds an OLED display, a glass touchscreen and HDMI output to the Switch Lite.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is barely a month old so it’s too early to expect any news on a Switch Lite successor. However, the Retro Remake’s mod adds some crucial upgrades to Nintendo’s handheld that was released in 2019 and gives us some idea of what a next-gen version could look like. Notably, it’s a no-solder mod that mostly only requires connecting cables and can output 1080p HDMI video to a larger screen than the Switch Lite’s 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen.

Retro Remake previously offered a SUPER5 OLED Touch mod, which lacked the HDMI feature. Adding the extra feature proved to be a serious challenge, according to the company’s co-founder, who said the project took “18 months of R&D, just as many failed revisions, and more than $200K in costs.”

“I can’t describe how soul-crushing it was to go through so many failed revisions,” Taki Udon wrote on X. “After the third failure, I was hopeful every subsequent version would be successful, but they weren’t.”

Testing is still underway for the SUPER5 OLED Touch HDMI upgrade kit, but the latest post shows that the Switch Lite mod playing Mario Kart on a larger display. Retro Remake’s HDMI upgrade kits start at $90, but are currently sold out on its website. According to an email sent out to preorder customers, the company is unsure of when it will ship these kits out.

Google rolling out chat search to Gemini app on Android

0

After coming to the web and iOS, the Gemini app is beginning to roll out chat search on Android.

Upon opening the navigation drawer, some users are seeing a “Search for chats” field at the top. Tapping takes you to a straightforward fullscreen interface. Search came to gemini.google.com in May, and iOS in recent weeks. As an Android user, I’ve just been using the PWA (which just picked up the new icon) as a workaround.

Search in the Gemini Android app is not widely rolled out. Similarly, the hamburger button/nav drawer is still seeing limited availability and not yet in the stable channel (or the iOS app). The four-color glow for the Gemini overlay is not widely rolled out either, while the old set of logos is still live in a few places.

Google app 16.26 widely rolled out to the stable channel yesterday, with a server-side update bringing the updated blue “Hello” greeting, which is now live across all platforms, and four-color “thinking” ring.
