Red Sox clubhouse seemingly not dwelling on Rafael Devers trade

0

It appears the Red Sox clubhouse is leaving the past in the past.

After Boston stunningly traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, many players admitted they were shocked, but knew they needed to have the “next man up” mentality because Devers was just one player out of 26.

During his weekly appearance on WEEI, manager Alex Cora was asked whether he was surprised how quickly his team moved on from the Devers trade.

“The less you talk about the subject, the better it is for the clubhouse, for the team,” Cora said. “We love Raffy, he’s a great guy, he’s a great player. We’re gonna miss him. But it’s a decision we made as an organization. The players, they’ve got a job to do, and it’s to go out there and play baseball.”

While Devers leaves a big hole in the lineup, a bigger focus for the Red Sox should be on getting back into the win column and eliminate the errors in games — whether that’s base running or not knowing where to throw the ball on a play.

The Red Sox are fourth in the American League East, 3½ games behind the third-place Toronto Blue Jays and four behind the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. They’ve been in and out of a Wild Card spot, but are now 1½ games back of the third and final one after Monday’s loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Boston can snap its three-game losing streak on Tuesday as its series with the Angels continues.

iPhone customers upset by Apple Wallet ad pushing F1 movie

0

Apple customers aren’t thrilled they’re getting an ad from the Apple Wallet app promoting the tech giant’s Original Film, “F1 the Movie.” Across social media, iPhone owners are complaining that their Wallet app sent out a push notification offering a $10 discount at Fandango for anyone buying two or more tickets to the film.

The feature film, starring Brad Pitt, explores the world of Formula 1 and was shot at actual Grand Prix races. It also showcases the use of Apple technology, from the custom-made cameras made of iPhone parts used to film inside the cars, to the AirPods Max that Pitt’s character, F1 driver Sonny Hayes, sleeps in.

However well-received the film may be, iPhone users don’t necessarily want their built-in utilities, like their digital wallet, marketing to them.

“I did not pay over $1000 for an iPhone to get advertised at,” complains one Reddit user (u/captain42d). Another recent post, already with dozens of replies, wants to know how to turn off Apple Pay ads.

As it turns out, there’s a new option in iOS 26’s beta build to disable “Offers & Promotions” from Apple Wallet that isn’t available in the current release. Instead, users not on the new beta build only have the option to disable notifications or to turn off seeing card benefits within Wallet during checkout. They can’t opt out of offers.

The addition of the new control toggle in iOS 26 suggests that Apple plans to push more marketing messages and promotions through the Wallet app in the future — something many iPhone users won’t appreciate.

Apple customers are generally averse to advertisements and marketing efforts pushed to their devices without their consent. In the past, they’ve pushed back at ads for Apple’s services in their iOS Settings, for example. And over 10 years later, people are still complaining about the U2 album that automatically appeared in their iTunes music library.

Recalling that marketing debacle, one Reddit user writes of the new Wallet push notification for the F1 film, “I am getting Bono flashbacks.”

Apple has been heavily promoting the F1 film along with its distribution partner, Warner Bros., which has included the launch of a haptic trailer with vibration feedback. The company even kicked off its recent WWDC 2025 keynote this month with a preview of the film’s action, with participation from Apple CEO Tim Cook and SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, as a race car driver.

We reached out to Apple for comment and did not immediately hear back.

The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is out now and it costs $400

0

The limited-edition, Xbox-branded Meta Quest 3S headset has arrived. Reports over the weekend suggested that this model, which Meta announced a little over a year ago, would become available on June 24 and that turned out to be the case.

This version of the headset comes in Xbox’s classic black aesthetic with a green trim, and a matching Xbox Wireless Controller and Touch Plus controllers. You’ll be able to connect other controllers to the headset, including the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller, as well as third-party gamepads like the Backbone Pro.

The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition has 128GB of storage and comes with an Elite Strap, as well as three months of access to both Meta Horizon+ and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. With the latter, you can play games via the cloud on the Xbox app, including supported games you own that are not part of the Game Pass Ultimate catalog.

At $400, this bundle costs a bit more than the standard $300 Meta Quest 3S. Microsoft says that the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is available now, but “quantities are extremely limited.” If you’d like to pick one up, you can do so from Meta’s website, Best Buy in the US and Argos and EE in the UK. It’s only available in those two countries.

The Xbox app with cloud gaming support has been available on Quest headsets since late 2023. Still, this partnership aligns with Microsoft’s push to have Xbox games accessible on as many devices as possible. The company recently announced Xbox-branded ASUS ROG Ally handheld gaming PCs that will be available later this year, and it has hinted at a more open future for the Xbox platform.

Google Tensor G6 in Pixel 11 reportedly using TSMC 2nm process

0

According to a new report, Google is planning to jump to TSMC’s 2nm process for Tensor G6 faster than it has in prior years.

The first Tensor chip in 2021’s Pixel 6 was built on a 5nm process at Samsung, with the following year’s Tensor G2 chip using the same process despite the same year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 moving to a 4nm process. It took Google a year to catch up, with Tensor G3 being the first on a 4nm process, and the current Tensor G4 following suit despite current Qualcomm and MediaTek chips being built on a 3nm process. Google’s move to TSMC later this year with Tensor G5 will mark the transition to a 3nm process.

But, according to a new report, Google isn’t looking to lag behind next year.

It’s being reported (via analyst @dnystedt) that Google will leverage TSMC’s 2nm process for Tensor G6 on the Pixel 11 series in 2026. If true, that marks a shift in how Google has kept up with the competition, as even the next Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset is likely going to still be using a 3nm process. Somewhat unbelievably, that could mean that Google could beat its competitors to the punch in this regard, as a 2nm Snapdragon chip wouldn’t arrive until a few months after Tensor G6. Notably, though, there is word that Qualcomm might use TSMC for a 3nm version of the upcoming Snapdragon flagship, while Samsung may produce a 2nm version specific to Galaxy devices.

The focus, for now, should absolutely be on Google’s initial switch to TSMC’s 3nm process later this year with Tensor G5, but it’s interesting nonetheless to see that Google is looking for further advancements this quickly.

Mass. Trinitarios gang kidnaps person while wearing law enforcement jackets, officials say

0

A Massachusetts gang that officials say has fueled a decade of bloodshed is now accused of kidnapping a man while wearing law enforcement jackets.

Isiah Medina, also known as “Ice”, 25, and Rodderith Peralta, also known as “Mago”, 26, both of Lawrence, were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Both men are members of the Lawrence Chapter of the Trinitarios gang and are in custody on unrelated state charges.

At about 8:15 p.m. on May 5, 2024, a resident near 30 Shattuck Road in Andover heard someone yelling, “help.” As they looked outside, they saw a man being pushed into the back seat of a Jeep by two men wearing a dark colored jacket or shirt with the letters “DEA” on the back and a tan colored baseball hat.

But the two men weren’t law enforcement agents, officials said.

The Andover Police Department arrived and found a shoe, a sock and a key ring with a key and fob.

The man’s girlfriend began receiving calls by blocked phone numbers regarding the now missing man, court documents state.

At about midnight three days later, the man was found outside a CVS on Bridge Street in Lowell.

The man told police he had been kidnapped by men wearing law enforcement jackets and held in a basement for three days. He also asked police to call his mom.

But he didn’t want to officially report the kidnapping because he said “they” know where his mom lives and is not sure if “they” are still watching him, according to court documents.

At the hospital, the man who had been kidnapped told police he was originally approached by a “white old man with glasses,” who told him he was under arrest, court documents state. But when he saw five other masked people, he knew it was not actually officials arresting him.

He began to run.

Eventually, his kidnappers handcuffed and pepper sprayed him, court documents state.

Once on the highway, he was able to break out the rear window of the Jeep by kicking it and was able to briefly run away. He was recaptured and brought to unknown location in Lowell where he was held in a basement.

He was blindfolded and every time he tried to take it off, he’d get “smacked,” he told officials. The man was given food, Percocet and sandals. The men took his two phones and texted the man’s girlfriend to go to his apartment. The man who was kidnapped believes the other men were also planning to kidnap her.

“The males stated that no one was going to pay for him and was no longer of any use,” court documents state. “They ultimately decided to let him go. He was blindfolded and put into the back of a vehicle.”

His hands were zip-tied and the blindfold was removed and replaced with a jacket over his head. After being let go, officials said the man asked someone nearby to help cut off the zip-ties.

Investigators found photos of the kidnapped man on Medina and Peralta’s phones. One of the photos shows the man still handcuffed with a winter hat pulled down to cover his face, but not covering his mouth to allow him to smoke. Another photo shows a bottle believed to be urine near the man. Text conversations also show the two men talking about how the man kidnapped defecated on himself.

During one video, Peralta’s hand, identified by a tattoo, can be seen on the man’s face.

Later, officials learned the man who had been kidnapped was “a Trinitario associate and large-scale drug trafficker who makes a lot of money selling drugs, particularly selling drug in Maine,” court documents state.

The man was known to pay Trinitarios members for protection, court documents state. The Trinitarios gang also knew of the man’s drug distribution activities and believed him to be in possession of a large quantity of drugs or money in his residence, “which prompted the kidnapping and robbery.” Officials added that they believe the kidnappers were attempting to take his source of supply and his drug customers.

Court documents state that the man sold large quantities of drugs in Maine, and could make about $50,000 every two or three days.

Medina and Peralta are expected to appear in U.S. District Court next week.

The charge of conspiracy to commit a kidnapping provides for a maximum penalty of up to life in prison, and up to five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

In February, officials announced charges against 24 members of the Massachusetts Trinitarios gang, including leadership, adding that it is a “significant blow” to the criminal enterprise.

Two dozen leaders, members and associates of the Trinitarios gang have been charged with federal offenses, including racketeering conspiracy, in connection with six murders and 11 attempted murders. Two individuals, who were 15 and 16 at the time of the criminal offenses, have been charged by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office with murder.

The Trinitarios started at Rikers Island in New York in the 1990s by people who were facing murder charges. It since spread to Massachusetts. In 2019, federal prosecutors also charged 32 people they accused of being members of a Lawrence-based branch of the gang.

Google introduces AI mode to users in India

0

Google introduced its AI mode, a Q&A-style search tool, to users in India today. The company said that this tool is still in the experimental stage and users will need to opt in to it through Search Labs.

Once a user has opted in, they can ask queries in English. Google didn’t specify whether it plans to support local languages or when that might be available.

Users can search for answers to complex, multi-part queries such as “My kids are 4 and 7 and have lots of energy. Suggest creative ways to get them active and moving indoors, especially on hot days, without needing a lot of space or expensive toys.” Additionally, users can ask follow-up questions to refine results.

Google started testing AI mode with premium subscribers in the U.S. earlier this year. The company then started broadly rolling out the feature to all U.S. users after its Google IO event. Over time, the company has added a shopping feature, introduced voice and image search support, and also introduced ads.

The company said that voice and image search features are supported for users in India, given that voice is a popular mode for search. It added that the AI mode is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5. The company also noted that early testers of the AI mode are asking 2-3x longer queries.

With more than 870 million internet users, India is one of the biggest markets for Google. It also acts as a testing ground for the company to observe how multilingual users use its products.

While Google still has a lion’s share in the search market, people have started using chat-based AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity more in their daily lives. With AI mode, Google wants users who prefer that kind of interface to use its own product.

Apart from AI mode, Google has been pushing products such as AI overviews, which summarize query results for you, in search. The company said in April that more than 1.5 billion people are using AI overviews across the globe. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Google’s AI features are hurting publishers, which have seen traffic drop-offs from organic search.

The next Samsung Unpacked event takes place on July 9

0

It’s almost time for another one of Samsung’s Unpacked events. The third Unpacked to be held this year (following installments in January and May) will take place on July 9 at 10AM ET. It will emanate from Brooklyn, New York and stream on the Samsung Newsroom, the company’s website and its YouTube channel.

Samsung is promising a look at the “next evolution of Galaxy AI and the ever-expanding Galaxy ecosystem.” The company usually debuts its latest foldables in the summer, so we are expecting to see the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 here. As if there was any doubt that this Unpacked will focus on foldables, an image Samsung sent out along with event invitations (embedded below) makes that clear. It’s looking like the rumored Galaxy Z Fold Ultra is in store too, as a teaser video includes the phrase “Ultra Unfolds.” Way to be subtle, Samsung.

A new Galaxy Watch also seems likely to make an appearance, while rumors have been flying around that this Unpacked may feature a Galaxy S25 FE, which is slated to arrive later this year. We may even get a glimpse of a Samsung tri-fold phone. Meanwhile, the Android XR headset that Samsung has been working on with Google is slated to arrive this year — this Unpacked seems like a good opportunity for the company to spill the beans on that.

If you’re already pretty sure that you’re going to switch to a new Samsung device, you don’t necessarily have to wait until July 9 to make a reservation for one of the upcoming models. In fact, if you make a reservation starting tonight on Samsung’s website, you can receive a $50 credit.

Google AI Mode suggesting prompts based on your past searches

0

To encourage people to try AI Mode, Google is now suggesting prompts based on your Search history. This is a pretty nice way to inform people about the kind of questions that work well.

Previously, all AI Mode users saw the same three suggestions. The most recent set includes: Help me find intro offers for popular gyms and workout classes, Make a table comparing memory foam vs hybrid mattresses, and What are some staycation things I can do this summer.

Google is now showing customized prompts “Based on your Google activity” to get people to try AI Mode. They refresh every time you visit the “Meet AI Mode” page via the Google app, Search widget, or Pixel Launcher shortcuts. My recommended prompts are pretty relevant:

  • Tell me about the making of Slow Horses: I recently asked about season 5’s premiere date
  • Recommend a Lenovo laptop: Work research in the past day
  • Discuss Pixel Fold’s desktop mode: Ditto

We’re seeing this with the latest Google app beta (version 16.24) on Android and iOS with the AI Mode Search Lab enabled

Since I/O 2025 last month, Google has expanded AI Mode to all users in the US. Last week, testing on Search Live’s audio-only mode got underway, while there’s also the ability to create financial charts

Looking forward, there’s Search Live’s camera mode, Deep Search, agentic capabilities, and personal context.

Tesla’s robotaxis have already caught the attention of federal safety regulators

0

Federal safety regulators have reached out to Tesla a day after the automaker began providing rides in its branded robotaxis in Austin.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted Tesla after numerous videos posted online appear to show Tesla robotaxis violating traffic laws in South Austin, where the company is providing rides to invited customers. Bloomberg was the first to report that NHTSA reached out to Tesla. NHTSA confirmed to TechCrunch that is has contacted the automaker.

“NHTSA is aware of the referenced incidents and is in contact with the manufacturer to gather additional information,” the company said in an emailed statement. “NHTSA will continue to enforce the law on all manufacturers of motor vehicles and equipment, in accordance with the Vehicle Safety Act and our data-driven, risk-based investigative process.  Under U.S. law, NHTSA does not pre-approve new technologies or vehicle systems – rather, manufacturers certify that each vehicle meets NHTSA’s rigorous safety standards, and the agency investigates incidents involving potential safety defects. Following an assessment of those reports and other relevant information, NHTSA will take any necessary actions to protect road safety.”

On Sunday, Tesla began giving paid rides to invited customers in South Austin. The launch, while limited in size and scope, is the first real test of the automaker’s autonomous vehicle technology. Tesla does sell its branded Full Self-Driving Supervised software to owners of its vehicles. FSD handles steering and braking when engaged. However, it is considered an advanced driver assistance system that requires the driver to have their hands on the wheel.

Tesla robotaxis are equipped with an unsupervised version of FSD, although the company has not provided specific details about this software. The robotaxis, which customers can hail via an app, are meant to drive on their own. Notably, Tesla robotaxis have a human “safety monitor” sitting in the front passenger seat during these rides.

Videos posted online show the Tesla robotaxis driving over the speed limit and in one case, swerving into the wrong lane.

TechCrunch reported Sunday that Ed Niedermeyer, author of “Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors,” who is in Austin to monitor the robotaxi rollout, took video showing a Tesla branded robotaxi suddenly hitting its brakes on two occasions without reason. A video, which TechCrunch has viewed and has since been posted on YouTube, shows that in both instances the Tesla hit the brakes as it approached police vehicles that were located in parking lots adjacent to the roadway.
