Jessie J ‘to disappear for a bit’ after revealing she has breast cancer

0

Jessie J has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The “Bang Bang” singer said in an Instagram video posted Tuesday, June 3 that she was “diagnosed with early breast cancer.”

“I’m highlighting the word ‘early,’“ the 37-year-old while emphasizing the importance of early detection. ”Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding onto the word ‘early.’”

Jessie J, who has a 2-year-old son named Sky, said she has “been in and out of tests throughout this whole period.”

The Grammy-nominated songstress added that she is “going to disappear for a bit” following her performance at Summertime Ball in London on June 15 to have surgery.

“It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job,” Jessie J joked, adding that she is “getting to keep my nipples” and “will come back with massive tits and more music.”

Jessie J’s Instagram post was flooded with positive comments from fellow musicians, celebrities and fans.

“Your literally my favourite person and I’m praying for you you’ve got this,” Rita Ora commented. “My mother had it and I know the surgery and any treatment on this matter is mentally tough so I’m here for you.”

Meanwhile Michelle Visage wrote, “Sending you so much love and healing energy.”

Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, burst onto the music scene with her 2010 debut single, “Do it like a Dude.” However, her next single “Price Tag” brought her international stardom. The song topped the charts in nineteen countries, peaking at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both singles preceded her platinum-selling debut album, “Who You Are.”

Jessie J saw continued success with her following albums “Alive” (2013) and “Sweet Talker” (2014), the latter which contained the global smash “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. The diamond-certified single peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jessie J followed up with her four-part fourth album “R.O.S.E.” and her Christmas album, “This Christmas Day,” both in 2018.

The singer most recently released the songs “No Secrets” and “Living My Best Life,” which prompted her to share her cancer diagnosis.

“I mean you can’t make it up,” Jessie J said in her Instagram video. “It’s a weird topic and a weird situation.”

One of Africa’s most successful founders is back with a new AI startup and already raised $9M

0

In 2023, co-founders Karim Jouini and Jihed Othmani sold their expense management startup Expensya to Swedish procurement software firm Medius in what is widely considered to be one of the largest acquisitions of an African startup. Some sources say the sum was just over $120 million, although deal terms were not disclosed.

Success achieved, both founders swore off entrepreneurship, never intending to do another startup again and Jouini became a CTO role in the merged software company, with other acquisitions spanning three continents.

But the pull of a new technological wave – generative AI – and the thought that they may be able to  build something even bigger with them have drawn them back in.

The two have now co-founded Thunder Code, a generative AI-powered software testing platform, which has already secured $9 million in seed funding, they told TechCrunch.

“It’s pretty crazy because we promised not to do another company because Expensya was too hard,” Jouini said. “But I think it’s like when people have two kids, they forget how hard the first one was. This new venture is less than six months old and already super intense, but we’re fired up. We’re convinced this is unicorn material.”

Jouini says his transition into head of technology at Medius reignited a spark he missed after years as Expensya’s frontman. As he oversaw the integration of six companies across three continents, he saw firsthand how generative AI could reshape the software industry. Testing was a universal problem, no matter the product, a realization that seeded the idea for Thunder Code.

Thunder Code tackles slow, manual testing with AI-powered “agents” that mimic human testers. These agents simulate QA processes, catch subtle UI and UX issues, and learn from feedback.

Determined to avoid Expensya’s early missteps, Jouini prioritized speed. “We shipped our first MVP in week six, and now the product is much more solid six months in than Expensya was in year four,” he said. This reflects a widely held belief in startup land that fast feedback trumps perfect plans.

Thunder Code is already gaining traction, with paying customers and pilot programs across the U.S., Canada, France, and Tunisia. The company partners with delivery managers, QA shops, and developer teams eager to test and ship faster. Its current focus is web application testing, with plans to expand into mobile, desktop, and API testing by late 2025.

In addition to speed, Jouini’s second rodeo also applies other hard-earned lessons from Expensya, like focusing on core features and getting the best talent as soon as possible. He’s unapologetic about early dilution, as it relates to investing in top talent. “A lot of African entrepreneurs are scared to dilute capital because they want to keep 100%. We believe that if we create a unicorn while diluting ourselves, that’s good value,” he remarked.

Jouini believes, however, that AI will let Thunder Code generate 10 times the value with fewer people, echoing the broader sentiment shift toward leaner AI-powered teams.

Nevertheless, Jouini admits the jump from expense management to software developer tools was a leap despite the pain points feeling familiar. Yet, he sees software testing as a bigger, more complex market, projected to exceed $100 billion by 2027, still dominated by legacy code-based platforms like Tricentis and BrowserStack, that may be slow to adapt. He believes Thunder Code’s fast execution with AI gives it an edge even against similar new agentic products.

Thunder Code, headquartered in Paris with an office in Tunis, joins an increasingly crowded market of startups all attempting to do same with entrants ranged from UIPath to startups like Jetify, Nova AI.

It helps that his co-founder, Othmani, brings deep expertise in generative AI, having built internal AI tools at Expensya years before ChatGPT made waves. Their complementary skills and the $9 million raised in six months position Thunder Code to move fast and capture market share, Jouini said.

The funding round includes familiar faces from Expensya’s cap table, including Silicon Badia and Janngo Capital, along with Titan Seed Fund and strategic angels like Roxanne Varza (Director of Station F) and Karim Beguir, CEO of Instadeep, Africa’s biggest AI startup. Former and current Expensya employees who cashed out during the acquisition have also invested. “Some of our investors are actually Expensya employees and I’m glad it worked out that way,” said Jouini.

Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will stream next-day on Hulu and Peacock

0

Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will have a new streaming home this fall. Sony Pictures Television has inked multi-year deals for the pair of iconic game shows to stream on Peacock, Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in the US. The agreement includes both in-season syndicated episodes and library episodes. It’s a next-day deal, so broadcast channels are still the first spot to see the newest content. However, this remains a very exciting development for Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune fans, since it’s the first time currently syndicated seasons will be available on the major national streaming platforms.

Both shows will begin this new streaming arrangement in September, when Jeopardy! will start its 42nd season in syndication. The quiz show has amassed a whopping 45 Emmy Awards and was also honored with a Peabody Award. Wheel of Fortune will be going into its 43rd season in syndication this fall.

Waiting for UWB in ‘Google’s Find Hub’

0

This was just supposed to be about how Google has yet to launch UWB finding and that I’ve gone all-in with the Moto Tag as my tracker of choice, but then “Google’s Find Hub” happened.

9to5Google has a rebooted newsletter that highlights the biggest Google stories with added commentary and other tidbits. Sign up here!

That is currently the name of the app on the Play Store listing. It changed from “Google Find My Device” — which was its own hassle because the name on homescreens was “Find Device” due to length reasons — two weeks ago

It’s “Find Hub” or “Google Find Hub” everywhere else, including the website (which has the People tab in the navigation rail), android.com, and support documents. There’s one reference to “Google’s Find Hub network,” but it’s otherwise the “Find Hub network.”

Advertisement – scroll for more content

Referring to anything as “Google’s” is new for the company, with “by Google” usually being the preferred route as seen with “Phone by Google” and “Files by Google” on the app front. There’s of course “Made by Google” as the overarching hardware family name, while it might still technically be “Wear OS by Google.”

While unwieldy for apps, I can see why the company doesn’t want something called “Google Files” when “Google Drive” exists. However, it should just be “Google Phone” like “Google Messages” at this point.

Maybe “Google’s” is born out of the company not wanting people to think the service is “Google Find” and that the app serves as a centralized “Hub” for it? Only Google knows, but “Google Find Hub” is perfectly fine. We’ll have to see if anything else gets branded “Google’s” in the future.

Anyways, ultra-wide band (UWB) support is not yet available in the Find Hub app. It was announced alongside the name change, with Google saying to expect it in May. As of today, it’s not yet available. The Moto Tag was announced last June and went on sale in August. It’s been a pretty long wait for UWB.

That said, even without UWB, I’ve gone all-in with the Moto Tag after previously using Pebblebee and Chipolo’s latest offering.

I liked that the Pebblebee had a rechargeable battery that’s a bit less tamperproof. Then there was the Chipolo Pop announced in April where the removable coin cell battery technically aids longevity. I liked the various color options it came in, with the blue, red, yellow, and green being pretty Google-y. I had trouble pairing the companion app, but I otherwise liked the compact — albeit large coin — design.

Moto Tags were my most recent purchase in preparation for UWB (1-pack and 4-pack), and this is the design I like the most. For some, built-in holes for keychains are a must, but I don’t have that particular requirement. Size and discretion is ultimately the most important factor for hiding tags in my bags.

I’ve had zero issues with the companion app, which I’d like to think is due to Motorola’s inherent familiarity with Android. The advantage of course is precision finding when it launches. I’d like to think that becomes a standard capability in the future for all Find Hub trackers.

Gregory Shaw leads Blue Sox past Gulls for Opening-Day home win

0

HOLYOKE – Gregory Shaw dominated on the mound Tuesday night to help lead the Valley Blue Sox to a 1-0 Opening-Day win at home against the Newport Gulls.

Shaw struck out six batters in five innings of work and allowed one hit and two walks.

The starting pitcher took control of the game, which can be attributed to his determination and attitude to improve each game.

“I think I could do a better job executing with two strikes,” he said. “I let up one of those nice hits [Newport] had, which was on a two-strike count.

“I think I can improve on that, but also commanding and pounding the zone.”

Shaw’s performance does not come as a surprise, as he was named a 2024 NECBL All-Star Pitcher. Last year, he started six games for Valley with 30 innings pitched.

The 2024 All-Star recorded a 2-0 record with 20 strikeouts and an impressive 2.34 ERA. The Blue Sox’s newly acquired head coach, Endy Morales, was impressed with Shaw’s performance.

“[Shaw] was very professional,” Morales said. “That’s what he does. The guy was an All-Star, and we picked him to be our Opening-Day starter because he has the experience and a [strong] pitch arsenal.”

The senior also played his 2025 NCAA season for the UConn Huskies. Shaw earned a 4-0 record this year with the Huskies, where he also registered a 4.45 ERA with 43 strikeouts.

Shaw holds down the fort on the mound with his strong command in the NCAA and NECBL.

The Gulls knocked Valley out of the 2024 NECBL playoffs last season. And Shaw emphasized that it was great to defeat the defending champs, but he has a goal this season to stay focused.

He wants to go out and compete each day for his teammates and coaches.

“I just want to go out there and compete,” The 2024 All-Star said. “The wins and losses will take care of themselves as long as we compete every day. I think we will put ourselves in a good position to win.”

Windsurf says Anthropic is limiting its direct access to Claude AI models

0

Windsurf, the popular vibe coding startup that’s reportedly being acquired by OpenAI, said Anthropic significantly reduced its first-party access to its Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Sonnet AI models.

Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan said in a post on X that Anthropic gave Windsurf little notice for this change, and the startup now has to find other third-party compute providers to run several of Anthropic’s most popular AI models on its platform.

“We have been very clear to Anthropic that this is not our desire – we wanted to pay them for the full capacity,” said Mohan on X. “We are disappointed by this decision and short notice.”

In a blog post, Windsurf said it has some capacity with third-party inference providers, but not enough, so this change may create short-term availability issues for Windsurf users trying to access Claude.

The decision comes just a few weeks after Anthropic seemed to pass over Windsurf during the launch of Claude 4, the company’s new family of models, which offer industry leading performance on software engineering tasks.

On launch day, Windsurf said it did not receive direct access from Anthropic to run Claude 4 on its platform, and still hasn’t. This forced the company to rely on a workaround that’s more expensive and complicated for developers to access Claude 4. Meanwhile, other popular AI coding tools — including Anysphere’s Cursor, Cognition’s Devin, and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot — seemed to have direct access to Claude 4 models at launch.

The AI-assisted coding sector, also know as vibe coding, has heated up in recent months. OpenAI reportedly closed on a deal to acquire Windsurf in April. At the same time, Anthropic — whose AI models are a favorite among developers — has invested more in its own AI-coding applications. In February, Anthropic launched its own AI coding application, Claude Code, and in May, the startup held its first Code with Claude developer conference.

“We’re prioritizing capacity for sustainable partnerships that allow us to effectively serve the broader developer community,” said Anthropic spokesperson Steve Mnich in an email to TechCrunch on Tuesday, noting that it’s still possible to access Claude 4 on Windsurf via an API key. “Developers can also access Claude through our direct API integration, our partner ecosystem, and other development tools.”

Windsurf has grown quickly this year, reaching $100 million ARR in April, in an attempt to catch up with more popular AI coding tools such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot. However, Windsurf’s limited access to Anthropic’s models may be stunting its growth.

Several Windsurf users who spoke with TechCrunch were frustrated by the lack of direct access to Anthropic’s best AI coding models.

Ronald Mannak, a startup founder that specializes in Apple’s programming language, Swift, told TechCrunch that Claude 4 represented a significant jump in capabilities for his workloads. While Mannak has been a Windsurf customer since late 2024, he’s switched to using Cursor in recent weeks so that he can vibe code more easily with Claude 4.

As a short-term solution to support Claude 4, Windsurf allows users to connect their Anthropic API keys to their Windsurf accounts. However, developers have noted that this “bring your own key” solution is more expensive and complicated than if Windsurf provided the models itself.

When it comes to vibe coders, optionality is the name of the game. Every few months, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic release new AI models that seem to outperform the industry on coding tasks. Because of that, it benefits vibe coding startups to support AI models from all the leading developers.

Windsurf spokesperson Payal Patel tells TechCrunch via email that the company has always believed in providing optionality for users. In this case, it seems Anthropic has made that a bit more challenging.

What new game announcements to expect, how to watch and schedule

0

As if early June wasn’t already going to be a wild enough time in the gaming world with the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, that’s also when a whole host of showcases takes place as part of Summer Game Fest. Along with three main events — Sony State of Play, Summer Game Fest Live and the Xbox Games Showcase — there are a bunch of other ones in store, including the always-delightful Day of the Devs.

There some brand-new showcases this year as well, while others are somewhat conspicuously missing. Ubisoft hasn’t announced a Forward event, for instance — perhaps because it has delayed a bunch of big games and isn’t ready to talk about them — but it has teased that something Splinter Cell-related is in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red popped up at Epic Games’ State of Unreal event earlier in the week. To show off the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, CDPR offered up a very pretty tech demo of The Witcher 4, which ran at 60 fps with ray-tracing enabled on a base PS5. Quite impressive.

Anyway, as things stand, SGF is slated to run from June 4 until June 9. With E3 officially dead (organizer Entertainment Software Association is planning an industry-focused event for next April instead), SGF is now the de-facto replacement and the biggest event for announcements and updates this side of Gamescom in August.

We’ll update this preview as more details about the showcases emerge, including additional events in the SGF nebula. We’ll embed videos for each stream as they become available as well.

Engadget will be on the ground in Los Angeles for the in-person side of SGF, which is for media and creators. We’ll be bringing you hands-on impressions of many of the games that are featured during SGF Live.

Most folks will be keeping up with everything from home, though. To that end, here’s a breakdown of how to watch Summer Game Fest 2025 and what to expect from the extravaganza (we’re bound to get a Hollow Knight: Silksong release date this time, right?!?!).

As John McClane famously once said, “Welcome to the party, pal!” The latest State of Play was a last-minute addition to the SGF schedule. Sony announced it only a day before airing the showcase (in fairness, the company usually only gives a one-day heads up about these streams).

The event will run for over 40 minutes and feature “must-play games coming to PS5” from developers based around the world. That suggests we’ll see a variety of titles from Sony’s third-party partners. Perhaps we’ll get release dates for some previously announced games.

Sony often makes it clear if a State of Play will focus on third-party games. It did not do so here. So it stands to reason that we may something from the company’s own studios this time around. Here’s hoping!

Putting aside our annoyance at the timing of this showcase — late on a Friday evening in the UK and right when many folks on the East Coast are clocking out for the weekend — Summer Game Fest Live is one of the bigger events in early June. It starts at 5PM ET and will run for two hours.

Organizers are promising “spectacular new video game announcements, surprises and reveals.” That’s pretty compelling, especially since host Geoff Keighley (rightfully) downplayed expectations ahead of last year’s show.

We do know about a few games that will appear. SGF Live will include a fresh look at Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, a Soulslike action RPG from Leenzee, a studio based in China. That game will arrive in July. Open-world MMORPG Chrono Odyssey will make an appearance, as will something from Atomic Heart studio Mundfish.

Oh, and Hideo Kojima will be there, of course. SGF Live takes place just a couple of weeks before Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On the Beach arrives, so we’ll likely get another peek at that game before a more in-depth event on June 8 (more on that momentarily). Perhaps some of the other projects Kojima’s working on will get some time in the limelight too.

Keighley has also released an initial list of partners for SGF. It includes big names such as PlayStation, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, Steam, 2K, Epic Games and Square Enix. Embark Studios is on the list too, and given that there’s a lot of hype around its upcoming extraction shooter, Arc Raiders, there’ll be high hopes for a release date for that one.

You can watch SGF Live on more than 20 platforms, including YouTube (that stream will be available in 4K at 60 fps), Twitch, X, TikTok, Steam and international services. The event will stream live from the YouTube Theater, and you can attend in person, if you like.

In any case, we’ll be bringing you all the major news from Summer Game Fest Live. We just can’t promise we won’t have an adult beverage with an umbrella next to us while we’re covering the event.

Immediately after SGF Live ends, the YouTube and Twitch streams will segue into the summer 2025 edition of Day of the Devs. This indie-focused showcase invariably has a fantastic lineup of games worth keeping an eye on.

Among the games making appearances are Possessor(s) from Heart Machine and “nightmarish RPG” Neverway from Coldblood and co-publisher Outersloth. We’ll also see something from House House (Untitled Goose Game) — presumably the co-op “walker-talker” Big Walk that was revealed in 2023. In all, Day of the Devs will feature 20 games.

Last year’s show included 2024 game(s) of the year contender UFO 50, the very intriguing platformer Screenbound, survival climbing game Cairn, the delightfully kooky-looking Building Relationships and sci-fi mystery Phoenix Springs. My Steam wishlist somehow expands quite significantly after each Day of the Devs showcase. Weird how that always happens.

Sorry to everyone who was hoping for Baby Steps and Skate Story release dates from the SGF edition of Devolver Direct. This installment will be entirely focused on one game, and it’s neither of those.

Devolver Digital will be showing off a previously unannounced title called Ball x Pit: The Kenny Sun Story. The publisher hasn’t revealed any more details about this game yet, but apparently it’s one that the Devolver “team themselves can’t even put down — hundreds of hours later.” Devolver’s got a strong track record, so this will probably be worth your attention.

IO Interactive is running its very own showcase for the first time. Arguably the most exciting thing here is 007 First Light, the James Bond game that the studio has been working on for several years. The company has confirmed that we’ll see a world premiere of the game this week. The smart money is on a teaser or trailer of 007 First Light popping up at at SGF Live before a deeper dive during the IOI Showcase.

That’s not to say IO Interactive is done with Hitman: World of Assassination. You can expect details about future updates for that saga as well as upcoming collaborations for the Hitman franchise. The stream will also feature MindsEye, a game from ex-GTA producer Leslie Benzies’ studio, Build A Rocket Boy. This action-adventure title, which IOI is publishing, will hit PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on June 10.

Definitely don’t overlook the smaller events that take place during SGF, as you can always find plenty of treats among them. One such event is the Wholesome Direct, which will feature around 60 cozy games. It will include world premieres, demo announcements and updates from publishers and developers including Playstack, btf Games, ustwo games and Wētā Workshop (whose Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game arrives in July).

This one does what it says on the tin. It’s a showcase featuring games from women-led and majority-women studios. The Women-led Games Showcase will feature 39 titles, including world premieres and release dates.

The Latin American Games Showcase will feature more than 50 games, all of which are from Latin American developers, oddly enough. Expect world premieres, game update news and more from this one.

The Green Games Showcase is a new addition to the lineup for 2025. This will focus on the game’s industry’s “growing commitment to the environment.” It will feature games that make direct contributions to green initiatives. Other titles in the showcase center around sustainability, and some are designed to raise awareness or drive action regarding environmental causes.

Amazon Games, Skybound Games and Team17 are among those taking part. The stream will include a Q&A about how games can inspire meaningful action on climate change. There will also be a fundraising drive to help plant 50,000 trees.

What’s the over/under on the number of times the phrase “day one with Game Pass” will appear on this stream? That’s one phrase you can definitely expect to hear, but Microsoft will have plenty to share here. It’s the biggest Xbox showcase of the year. There will be reveals and updates from across Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.

Games that the company has in the pipeline include Fable (2026), Perfect Dark, Gears of War: E-Day, Everwild, State of Decay 3, Clockwork Revolution, Hideo Kojima’s OD and Contraband. It feels a little early for an update on The Elder Scrolls 6 since that game is still years away. But we may find out more about those other games and some we don’t yet know about, such as whatever Double Fine and Toys for Bob are working on.

I have my fingers crossed for more info on the Blade game that Arkane Studios is working on. It’s a reasonably safe bet that we’ll see something about the next Call of Duty here as well. There’s always going to be space for offerings from Microsoft’s partner studios and publishers too. Plus, you never know, we might get a peek at what Halo Studios has been cooking up.

One game we’ll definitely hear more about on June 8 is The Outer Worlds 2. That’s getting its own time in the spotlight, with a dedicated event that will start as soon as the main Xbox Games Showcase ends.

Kojima will join Keighley at the Orpheum Theatre in LA to kick off a world tour of events to celebrate the arrival of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. There will be a panel discussion with some special guests, as well as a live demo of the highly anticipated game. In case you can’t make it in person (ticket registration is open now), you can watch the hour-long event live at home.

Meanwhile, several publishers and other organizations are hosting their own shows around SGF. Here’s when those will take place:

  • Future Games Show — June 7, 4PM ET, on YouTube (featuring more than 40 games)

  • Frosty Games Fest — June 7, 7PM ET, on YouTube (showcasing “the coolest upcoming and recently released games made in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand”)

  • PC Gamer‘s PC Gaming Show — June 8, 3PM ET, on YouTube (with 50-plus games)

Phew. Get ready, gamers. Details on many, many new games are coming your way very soon.

NotebookLM notebooks can now be shared publicly via links

0

Google has updated NotebookLM today with the ability to publicly share notebooks via links, just like Docs.

Previously, sharing a notebook involved entering a person’s email address, with the ability to set “Viewer” (read-only) or “Editor” access. Enterprise and education users have more group/internal options, while Pro (previously Plus) subscribers could share a “Chat-only” notebook to viewers.

NotebookLM now allows you to make notebooks public and share via a link. On consumer accounts, tap the Share button in the top-right corner and select the “Anyone with a link” access level. Sharing is available for notebook owners and editors, with the ability to revoke/restrict public access. (Paid subscribers will get usage analytics.)

Additionally: “Once a public notebook is deleted or made private, any previously generated public share link will no longer work.” Afterwards, a globe icon appears next to the Share button.
