Every Google app with the fullscreen Account switcher redesign


Google is redesigning the Account switcher that appears in the top-right corner of every first-party app to be a fullscreen experience instead of a floating window that preserves context.

This gives the UI more space than before and matches the experience on the web. Your email address appears in the very first line. That’s followed by a larger circular avatar, greeting (“Hi, [name]!”), and “Manage your Google Account” button. The “Switch account” dropdown appears next on this page.

With Material 3 Expressive, the background uses a much more vibrant shade of Dynamic Color. In most apps, the Google Account switcher is used for nothing but its namesake. This is the case with Workspace apps.

Other apps without nav drawers use this menu to list key navigation elements, including settings. In these cases, you get a “More from [app]” heading to remind users where they are.

My main complaint with this redesign is that it removes spatial context by making the Account switcher a fullscreen interface when it doesn’t necessarily need to be. You’re very much taken out of the app you’re using. Fortunately, you can skip this page and still swipe up/down on the corner switcher like before.

A man faces nine charges after a fight involving a Boston Police officer and a gun in Mattapan on Sunday.

At about 12:19 p.m., an officer assigned to Mattapan was on patrol in the area of Westmore Road and Gilmer Street. While there, the officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation, according to a press statement from the Boston Police Department.

As the officer tried to detain the suspect, a fight broke out. During the struggle, a firearm owned by the suspect went off, but neither the suspect nor the officer was struck by the gunfire, according to the statement.

Boston Police Operations announced an officer-in-trouble call, and multiple officers from surrounding districts arrived on the scene. The suspect, 33-year-old Richard Raymond of Dorchester, was handcuffed, according to the police statement.

Police determined the firearm to be a Canik TP9SFx with fourteen rounds in the magazine. A spent shell casing was lodged in the gun.

After further investigation, detectives found a live round and a designer bag of marijuana in the suspect’s jacket pocket, the press release reads. Detectives also found one plastic bag containing fourteen grams (1/2 ounce) of fentanyl, fifteen non-prescribed pills and approximately $1,888 in cash.

Boston EMS responded to the scene and brought both the officer and the suspect to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Raymond is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, refusing to identify himself while operating a motor vehicle, trafficking a Class A substance and possessing a Class B substance with intent to distribute, according to the Boston Police Department.

Officers also determined that the suspect had four active warrants for his arrest for various charges, including firearm, drug and motor vehicle law offenses, according to the statement.

Texas could become the next US state to lay down the law with social media platforms. A Texas bill that would ban social media use for anyone under 18 recently moved past the Senate committee and is due for a vote in front of the Texas State Senate. The bill has until the state’s legislative session comes to an end on June 2, leaving roughly a week for it to be approved by both the Senate and the governor.

Earlier this year, the bill passed the House committee stage and was later voted in favor of by the state’s House of Representatives. If made into law, the bill would force social media platforms to verify the age of anyone setting up an account, much like how Texas passed legislation requiring websites hosting porn to implement an age verification system. On top of that, Texas’ social media ban proposes to let parents delete their child’s social media account, allowing the platforms 10 days to comply with the request or face a fine from the state’s attorney general.

Texas isn’t the only governing body interested in restricting social media access. Last year, Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, signed into law a bill that outright bans anyone under 14 from using social media and requires 14- and 15-year-olds to get parental consent to make an account or use an existing account. Notably, Texas’ proposed law is much stricter than that.

On a larger scale, the US Senate introduced a bill to ban social media platforms for anyone under 13 in April 2024. After being stuck in the committee stage, Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently made comments that signal a potential second attempt at getting this passed.

According to a new report, Google has locked in production of its Tensor chipsets for Pixel phones through at least the Pixel 14 generation over the “next 3 to 5 years.”

The first TSMC-made Tensor chip is set to debut later this year in the Pixel 10 series, but Google has apparently already locked in production for the next few generations.

Digitimes reports that Google has locked in plans for Tensor chip production with TSMC over the next “3 to 5 years,” with the “Pixel 14” being specifically mentioned (via @Jukanlosreve).

Recently, it was reported that when senior executives from Google’s US headquarters visited Taiwan a few months ago, they visited TSMC to discuss the shipment of mobile phone SoCs. The cooperation between the two parties will last for many years, at least until the stage of the new Pixel 14, which is about 3 to 5 years later.

The report also reiterates that Tensor chips made by TSMC and used in Pixel 10 will be produced on a 3nm process, as expected.

Google previously nailed down testing facilities in Taiwan for its next-gen chip, was rumored to be using a MediaTek modem, and was tipped to be using a fully custom ISP for Tensor G5.

Youth Grief Support Program

WILBRAHAM – Rick’s Place provides free, peer grief support groups for youth (ages 5-18) and their caregivers. Rick’s Place offers young people and their families a place to remember their loved ones and to avoid the sense of isolation that such losses can produce Rick’s Place was established in 2007, in memory of Rick Thorpe, who died in Tower Two of the World Trade Center on 9/11. Virtual support groups for patients and families facing cancer

PALMER – Cancer support groups – led by Camille St. Onge, oncology social worker for Baystate Health – will be offered in the coming months. Support groups are designed to help patients, their families, and caregivers cope with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

The meetings are open, meaning new members are always welcome. The meeting room is set up to allow for recommended social distancing and attendees are required to bring and wear their own mask while in the meeting room. Per Inside EVs, Cybertruck owners are now allowed by Tesla to trade in their cars for the first time since they hit the market – but they’ll incur a heavy hit in the process.

CarGurus recently showed depreciation rates of up to 45%. Meanwhile, Business Insider talked this past week with two owners who shared firsthand what value Tesla has assigned their Cybertruck. One owner, who bought a $100,000 AWD 2024 model and accumulated 19,623 miles, received a quote for $63,100 (a 37% depreciation); the other purchased a top-of-the-line $127,000 Cyberbeast last September was shown a quote for $78,200, which would amount to a 38% loss after eight months.

Tesla initially banned owners from reselling the vehicle –  a policy typically used to prevent scalping of high-demand vehicles and to maintain brand control. In Tesla’s case, it may also have delayed a wave of trade-ins or resales from owners facing a backlash owing to Elon Musk’s high profile in the Trump administration or frustrated with ongoing quality control issues, which have included runaway gas pedals and falling trim pieces.

Worth noting: trade-in figures are typically lower than private-party sales, and EVs as a category depreciate fast. According to Wired, some brands can lose up to 50% in year one.

How to watch SpaceX’s ninth Starship flight test on Tuesday


The FAA last week cleared SpaceX’s Starship to fly again after concluding its review of the previous flight, which ended in an explosion, and the next test could now take off as soon as Tuesday. SpaceX is eyeing May 27 for Starship’s ninth flight test, with a launch window opening at 7:30PM ET (6:30PM local time for the Texas Starbase). This launch will mark the first time SpaceX reuses a Super Heavy booster; the booster for flight nine previously flew with Starship’s seventh flight test earlier this year. While single-use parts have been replaced, SpaceX says it’s reusing 29 of the booster’s 33 Raptor engines.

As always, viewers at home will be able to watch along by tuning into the livestream, starting about 30 minutes before Starship launches. That will be available on SpaceX’s website and in a broadcast on its X profile.

SpaceX conducted Starship’s eighth flight test back in March, but the vehicle ran into some issues a few minutes after launch. The Super Heavy booster was able to return to the launch site after separation from the upper stage and be successfully caught by the tower’s “chopstick” arms, but as for the ship itself, several Raptor engines shut off, causing it to tumble and ultimately blow itself up.

SpaceX says the issue was likely due to “a hardware failure in one of the upper stage’s center Raptor engines that resulted in inadvertent propellant mixing and ignition.” It’s since made some changes to prevent that from happening again. SpaceX said in an update on May 22 that “engines on the Starship’s upper stage will receive additional preload on key joints, a new nitrogen purge system, and improvements to the propellant drain system.”

For flight nine, the Super Heavy booster won’t return to the launch site, but will instead splash down in the ocean. The Starship upper stage will attempt to deploy eight Starlink dummy satellites, and SpaceX is otherwise looking to this flight to test “several experiments focused on enabling Starship’s upper stage to return to the launch site.”

With the Pixel 10 series expected to be nearly identical to the current generation, color is how Google can physically distinguish the phones. A new leak today reveals the possible colors for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL.

According to Mystic Leaks (who previously shared the Material 3 Expressive redesign of Google Clock) today, the Pixel 10 will be available in:

  • “Obsidian (Black)”
  • “Blue (Blue)”
  • “Iris (Purple)”
  • “Limoncello (Yellow)”

“Obsidian” is always a given and was seen in the “Ask more of your phone” leak. There’s no traditional light color (or Porcelain), with Google possibly having “Limoncello” serve that role. It’s unlikely that Limoncello will be the final name, but Google has previously used that as a moniker/stand-in for Lemongrass.

Meanwhile, “Iris” would follow the Pixel 9a, while Google skipped “Blue” last year. There was of course the limited-edition Really Blue first-get Pixel, while the Pixel 2 had Kinda Blue. Then there’s the Barely Blue Pixel 4a, Bay Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 8a.

It will be interesting to see what shade of blue Google opts for as to not compete with Iris. If Google goes lighter, that could serve as another alternative to Porcelain.

Meanwhile, the rumored Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL colors are:

  • “Obsidian (Black)”
  • “Green (Green)”
  • “Sterling (Grey)”
  • “Porcelain (White)”

“Obsidian” and “Porcelain” aren’t surprising, while “Sterling” sounds like something in the middle. It sounds staid, just like the Hazel Pixel 9 Pro that borders on gray depending on the lighting.

Hopefully, “Green” will be much more vibrant if we’re getting a proper gray in the lineup. A return of the Pixel 8 Pro’s Mint or Pixel 8a’s Aloe would be great.

Bruins goalie helps Team USA to 1st World Championship gold medal in 92 years



Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman remained undefeated at the World Championship and was a brick wall for Team USA on Sunday and helped the Americans to its first gold medal in the tournament since 1933.

Swayman stopped all 25 shots he faced in the 1-0 overtime win.

The goalie was 6-0 entering Sunday’s game with a .905 save percentage and 1.98 goals-against average, and finished 7-0 with a .920 save percentage and 1.69 GAA.

Swayman’s strong tournament comes after a down season between the pipes in Boston. He went 22-29-7 with a 3.11 goals-against average and .892 save percentage.

“I couldn’t be happier to be at this tournament, especially based on the year I had,” Swayman said in Sweden, via The Hockey News. “I feel like a completely new human being and a completely new goalie. The guys in this room have been so incredible for just supporting me, and it’s just been a contagious locker room of joy. I just feel like a completely new human being.”

Bruins defensemen Mason Lohrei and Andrew Peeke also earned gold.

The gold medal game was quite the goalie duel and needed overtime to decide the winner.

Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson scored the golden goal 2:02 into overitme to lift the Americans to a win over Switzerland.

In the bronze medal game between Sweden and Denmark, Bruins center Elias Lindholm had two assists to earn the bronze.
