Cynthia Erivo is flying high with her most recent Golden Globe nomination.
The “Wicked: For Good” star became the first Black woman in history to be nominated twice for Best Actress (comedy or musical) when the Golden Globe nominations were revealed Monday, Dec. 8.
The recognition comes after Erivo picked up the same nomination last year for her first portrayal of Elphaba in the box office smash, “Wicked.”
“This is a beautiful, beautiful surprise,” the 38-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter following the news.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind from the beginning of the first film right through to this moment here. I don’t know that any experience is comparable. I don’t think I’ve experienced anything like it,” Erivo said.
“To be nominated twice with this movie is really special,” she continued. “I think that’s a testament to the work of Jon Chu and every single other person who has touched this set — Ari[ana Grande] and Jonathan [Bailey] and Marc Platt, who is our wonderful producer. Everyone has done such beautiful work, and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.”
Only 12 Black women had been nominated for Best Actress (comedy or musical) at the Golden Globes before Erivo’s second nomination, Variety reported. Angela Bassett is the sole winner to date, who took home the award in 1994 for her portrayal of Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
“It’s amazing, but also let’s make sure that it doesn’t stay that way,” Erivo told Deadline. “Let’s make sure that more Black women are nominated in this category. Being the first is always wonderful, but let’s make sure I’m not the last.”
Last year was the first time more than one Black woman was nominated in the category, Variety reported. Erivo picked up the nomination for “Wicked” while Zendaya was also nominated for her work in “Challengers.” Demi Moore went on the take home the prize for her role in “The Substance.”
Erivo was nominated for Best Actress alongside Rose Byrne, in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” Kate Hudson in “Song Sung Blue,” Chase Infiniti in “One Battle After Another,” Amanda Seyfried in “The Testament of Ann Lee” and Emma Stone in “Bugonia.”
Meanwhile Ariana Grande, Erivo’s co-star who plays Glinda in the “Wicked” films, also received a Golden Globe nod for Best Supporting Actress. With that, the duo became the first two actors from the same film to be nominated twice for their respective roles, Deadline reported.
Overall, “Wicked: For Good” earned five nominations, including Best Original Song in a Motion Picture for Stephen Schwartz’s “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble” as well as Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
The 2026 Golden Globe Awards will be held Sunday, Jan. 11 at the Beverly Hilton. Nikki Glaser will host the ceremony.
