Fatal fire in New Bedford: Woman trapped on third floor dies



A woman in her 70s died after becoming trapped on the third floor of burning house in New Bedford.

On Oct. 9, there fire was at 396-398 Elm Street in New Bedford around 8:30 p.m. First responders learned on the way there that residents were trapped on the second and third floors of the multi-family home.

Once at the house, firefighters saw fire coming from the second floor and heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors. They immediately made entry through a stairwell. They found one person, the woman in her 70s, and rescued her from the third floor.

She was taken by New Bedford EMS to a nearby hospital. The woman, who was in critical condition, was later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she died.

Officials have not released the woman’s name.

The fire does not appear suspicious but the exact cause has not been determined, according to officials. The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the New Bedford Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit, New Bedford Police, and State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

Nearly a dozen residents have been displaced from their homes and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
