Google Fi rolling out AI-enhanced audio to Android, iPhone

As announced last month, Google Fi Wireless is now rolling out AI-enhanced audio on Android and iOS.

While Google Fi just gained HD and HD+ calling, AI-enhanced audio comes into play when you’re talking to someone on a landline or “older device.” Google AI is leveraged to filter out distracting background noise and clarify speech on both ends.

The goal is “more natural-sounding conversations.” For example:

AI-enhanced audio is available on iOS and Android 11+. It’s enabled by default, and you can turn it off from the Google Fi app. Select your account (if you’re in a group) and scroll down to Phone settings for “Call quality” above Wi-Fi calling.

On Android, the Phone by Google calling screen will note “AI-enhanced by Google Fi” when active. Additionally, a silent alert in the notification shade explains how there’s “AI-enhanced audio on this call” with a brief explanation and link to settings.

Setting changes take effect on the next call. On the privacy front: “This feature processes audio on Google servers to enhance your call quality. Learn more about Google’s Privacy Policy.”

We’re seeing this live with version 146 (on Android) of the Google Fi app.
