The latest government shutdown is just a few days old, but Americans already have feelings about who’s to blame for the political pile-up on Capitol Hill.
More U.S. voters blame congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump for the shutdown, which has snarled life across the country in a variety of ways, according to NBC News.
But as Democrats and Republicans rev up their messaging machines, the polling also suggests there could be some fluidity to the public mood, with a decent share of voters saying they’re not sure who’s at fault, the news organization noted.
Here’s a quick look at four pulse-takings:
- An Oct. 1 Washington Post poll, the first day of the shutdown, saw 47% of U.S. adults blame Trump and Republicans, while 30% blamed Democrats, and 23% who were not sure. The survey also found that independents, a key bloc for the GOP, blamed Trump and Republicans over Democrats by a wider swath, 50% to 22%, NBC News reported. A third of Republicans were unsure whom to blame.
- A late September New York Times/Siena poll found a third of respondents (33%) blaming both sides equally, while around a quarter (26%) blamed Trump and the GOP, while 19% blamed Democrats. Two in 10 (21%) said they hadn’t heard enough to say, NBC News reported.
- A late September Marist, PBS News and NPR poll saw 38% of respondents blaming Republicans, while around a quarter (28%) blamed Democrats. A further 31% blamed both sides equally, according to NBC News.
- A late September Morning Consult poll found 45% of respondents blaming Republicans, while 32% said they’d blame Democrats. Sixteen percent said they had no opinion. and 7% chose “other,” according to NBC News..
