Music megastar pulls out of Northeast festival due to ‘personal reasons’

The Weeknd will no longer perform at Global Citizen Festival, with the international pop star citing “personal reasons” for his cancellation.

The “Blinding Lights” singer, who was initially announced as part of this year’s lineup, revealed that he was pulling out of the New York event on his Instagram story Monday.

“I regret to share that, due to personal reasons, I am unable to perform at Global Citizen,” he wrote. “Thank you to my fans for taking action with them, as I believe in their mission deeply. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Global Citizen later revealed that Cardi B, who’s long-awaited sophomore album “Am I The Drama?” dropped this past Friday, will join this year’s lineup.

“Central Park, I’m coming for you!!! I can’t wait to be home in New York, and to bring my new songs and all the DRAMA to the Global Citizen Festival,” Cardi said in a statement via Rolling Stone. “This one’s not like other music festivals — this one is about coming together to help children around the world, and I’m so proud to support such an important cause. New York City — see you Saturday. Let’s get it!!!”

Global Citizen is the world’s largest an advocacy platform dedicated to ending extreme poverty, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The organization relies on “millions of Global Citizens” to help combat “the critical issues of climate change, poverty, and inequality,” the agency’s website states.

Held in New York’s Central Park, the 2025 Global Citizen Festival will be hosted by Hugh Jackman. The rest of this year’s lineup includes Shakira, Tyla, Ayra Starr, Mariah the Scientist, Camilo and Elyanna.

The festival is set to stream live worldwide on Saturday Sept. 27. Tickets can be purchased or earned through the Global Citizen app and website.
