Google’s Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series phones are about to be the first smartphones to work with satellite SMS functionality on Orange, a carrier in Europe.
Orange is a carrier based in France, but active in over 25 countries across Europe and Africa. In December, the carrier is launching a satellite SMS feature in Europe, allowing customers to be able to send text messages when cellular networks are not available, including in countries that don’t offer Orange service.
The feature is powered by Skylo, one of the operators offering non-terrestrial network support. Google also leverages this same operator for Satellite SOS on Pixel phones and Pixel Watch 4.
And, on that note, Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series phones are the only devices able to use satellite SMS on Orange, at least for now. Orange says more devices will be added with time, explaining:
The offer is the result of a partnership with Skylo, a non-terrestrial network operator (NTN). To access it, customers must be Orange 5G or 5G+ subscribers and, initially, own a smartphone from the Google Pixel 9 or 10 range. This is a temporary exclusive; the “Satellite Message” offer is intended to be expanded later in terms of services and compatible devices. Coverage includes mainland France and 36 other countries, including Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the United States, and Canada.
Satellite SMS on Orange is free for the first six months, but will cost €5 per month after that. Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 owners on Orange will get access starting on December 11, 2025.
