Southwest Airlines has announced a major change to its long-standing policy, giving customers the option to select their seat when booking a flight.
The new policy will begin on Jan. 27, 2026, according to the airline’s statement.
Customers will be able to choose from various fare bundles, some of which will allow them to select a seat during the booking process. The airline will offer different seat types, including extra legroom, preferred and standard.
Passengers will also have the option to purchase seat upgrades.
“Our Customers want more choice and greater control over their travel experience,” Tony Roach, executive vice president of customer and brand at Southwest Airlines, wrote in the statement. “Assigned seating unlocks new opportunities for our Customers… and removes the uncertainty of not knowing where they will sit in the cabin. This is an important step in our evolution, and we’re excited to pair these enhancements with our legendary Customer Service.”
This shift comes just months after the airline company made another significant change to its business model.
In May, Southwest Airlines ended its “bags fly free” policy, meaning passengers are now charged for their first and second checked bags.
